Concerned about anesthesia with bradycardia

Posted by sharondh @sharondh, Sep 29, 2024

I was informed that I should have a colonoscopy, but I have concerns regarding going under anesthesia. I will be talking to my doctor further about this, however, I wanted to know if anyone else had any insight? Thank you so much….

They can give you a sedative and to the procedure while you are essentially awake. However, unless you know for a fact otherwise, the procedure is done with propofol, and quick-acting and quickly metabolized anesthetic drug. In some instances, propofol is also mixed with a smidge of fentanyl (don't freak out!. I had it, properly administered, during at least two electric cardioversions to restore sinus rhythm while I had been fibrillating).

Your surgeon runs the show, largely based on experience and skill. I would raise the topic with him/her and ask if you can be minimally sedated. You may not know this, maybe you do, but the procedure isn't for the squeamish, and it is often quite painful. That is why most surgeons insist on putting their patients out because our brains are wired for classical conditioning, and when we associate discomfort or horror with an event, we avoid it like the plague. But, you may need more colonscopies in the years ahead.

Spouse hx of bradycardia. Heart rate dropped to 30’s with anesthesia, stopped procedure. Want cardiologist clearance and probably do at the hospital.
Advise thorough discussion with gastro BEFORE doing prep. Not sure if he will agree to doing prep again.

I have ventricular tachyacdia and fibrillation. I had NSR until I had prostate removal surgery ( cancerous). First I had flutter. My cardiologist told me that anesthesia normally doesn't affect your heart rate. He said it was coincidenice. And propofol is very safe anesthestic drug.

I had sedation when my Pacemaker was put in for bradycardia. I also had it for a colonoscopy but that was before the Pacemaker so you definitely should check with the cardiologist.

I've never had trouble with having a colonoscopy under sedation and I much prefer it to anesthesia. Had no problems with pain or mess.
