Choosing between permanent colostomy vs temporary ileostomy?

Posted by browndognotnow @browndognotnow, Jun 5 3:27pm

My sister has a cancerous tumor that has to be removed. She has to decide if she wants to go the permanent route of a colostomy that requires one surgery or go with temporary ileostomy requiring a second surgery to remove it. She is a cancer survivor that has necrosis and scar tissue near the rectum area. Has anyone had to chose between the two?

I haven’t had any replies to my question. Just want to clarify the choice she is facing is between the permanent way or the temporary way that requires 2 surgeries. Thoughts please

I'm sorry no one with personal experience has advised yet. But if I can share the experience with someone I know that had the temporary and its now reversed with much success and she doesn't cause regret her choice. My tumor is so large and invasive if it's necessary I will do that as well. Whatever will keep me healthy.
I hope someone with direct experience will be able to share with you.
Best wishes

@browndognotnow I currently have a Urostomy, but was diagnosed with colorectal cancer last Sept. I have to decide about surgery soon. I also have lots of scar tissue & problems from 2 previous cancers. I was told IF I decide on surgery I will have a Colostomy. That would mean 2 bags for me & I just can't wrap my head around it. So far, I just keep saying No & putting it off as long as I can.
Look for an Ostomy Group for your sister. I attend one in person once a month and have learned lots!

@browndognotnow If I understand correctly, the choice is a surgery to remove the tumor and create a permanent colostomy, and a surgery to remove the tumor, do a repair to the colon that requires a temporary ileostomy and then later the temporary ileostomy would be taken down.

That is, to me, a very personal choice. Some people are fine with a colostomy and thrive. Others struggle. I think a lot would depend on the prognosis of the cancer; will she need additional surgeries or treatments in the future that would require a permanent diversion?

I have had two temporary ileostomies, and now have a permanent ileostomy. I guess if I had known what was going to happen I would have gone with the permanent ileostomy in the first place. But that is just my experience.

How does your sister feel about having a permanent colostomy?

She has decided to go with the permanent one. She has damaged tissue already in that area and does not want to risk an additional surgery. We are still waiting on surgery date. Thanks for responding.

@browndognotnow I'm glad she is on the path forward, and I hope her surgery goes well.

Let us know how it goes?
