Collagen for osteoporosis?

Posted by cpb @cpb, Jul 26, 2021

My friend's medical doctor has her take collagen for her bones. I decided to try it and wondered if anyone knows more than I do about this.

Thank you , The odd thing is my 5 th metatarsal
healed . It is the neck of my 4 th metatarsal and phalanx that hasn’t healed completely . That was the one I injured first .

So hard to not be able to walk. I am in the same predicament. Hopefully we heal soon. Keep researching. Sounds like you are doing everything you can. Is this your first/second fracture?

The one that hasn’t healed completely is my first fracture. 4 th metatarsal and phalanx . Than Dr said could walk . Dumbest thing ever . My ankle was way too weak . So rolled it Dec 14 th . Fractured my 5 th metatarsal . Been non weight bearing since Oct 2 nd . Other than a break when I was told could walk
. I can walk now . Just very careful .. They want me walking on it lol.

I have 2 stress fractures that are slow healing since January 2023 and another that was in June 2022 that took until December to heal. I am also on Evenity now. It is so frustrating. I also have used the bone stimulator. What kind of fracture? I take calcium and vitamin D and also I am on HRT. How did it break? I am so sorry for you. I understand your frustration.

Hello, I just started low dose HRT. Did you fracture while on HRT or did you start it after the fractures in the hopes of improving your bones along with Evenity. I'm hoping that HRT alone will improve my scores and keep me from fracturing but still wondering if it is enough. What dose of HRT are you on? Thanks for any information

Unfortunately, I have been on HRT for 5 years. I have had osteoporosis since I was 35, primarily because of estrogen deficiency and low weight. I am now 55. I took birth control for hormones until 50. I take 200 mg progesterone 12 days a months and .1 mg/day estradiol patch. Hope HRT is enough. My situation is more than just menopause. Good luck.

I am adding 'collagen peptides' hydrolyzed types I & II , 11 grams to my coffee every morning for the last 4 months. I've been doing this on my own as I am no longer able to take any prescribed medicines for osteoporosis due to past side effects. My medical Doctor wants me to try Evenity, and will not comment on collagen peptides for osteoporosis as he says there is no research for the results. However, I found research is mentioned in the following article to support the use of collagen peptides in treatment of osteoporosis: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/collagen-for-osteoporosis. I have a Dexa Scan coming up again in a few weeks, I guess I'll find out. I'll let you know what happens.

Dr Keith McCormick recommends collagen as well, in his book Great Bones. He claims that type 1 collagen is best for bones. He has formulated a collagen product specifically for bone health. You can find it on http://www.osteonaturals.com. it's called Osteo Collagen Pep with fortibone. I have been using it for months and really like it. It's unflavored and mixes with anything. Not sure what it's doing for my bones, but it's a great collagen supplement. Good luck!

When do you have your next DexaScan to see if it helped?
