What's your review of Cochlear Osia 2 System?

Posted by edemmenegger @edemmenegger, Jun 12, 2021

I am getting the implants in a week or so. Would like to hear from people who are using these bone conduction devices.

Thank you all for posting. I had excellent hearing in both ears till Feb 2022, 3 months ago, when I became suddenly deaf in left ear. I'm looking into the Osia 2 because the hearing loss is too severe for hearing aid to work. I'm afraid to drive, ride a bike, or even walk a trail as I don't feel safe since this happened. My husband thinks it's too soon to move forward because he thinks my hearing could improve but I feel I should move forward so looking for testimonials.

I'm excited for you! I remember having such mixed emotions before my surgery. I was excited to have the technology to hear better, but I was also anxious that the Osia wouldn't meet my expectations and I would be disappointed or that it wouldn't work at all and I'd be disappointed. These fears and concerns are natural, I think.

When my device was activated, all of those fears and anxiety went away. I find the device to be extremely comfortable (like wearing a barrette in my hair) and the sound is just like (to me) my natural hearing. Thank goodness we live in a time where such technologies are available to us.

Best of luck with your surgery! Surgery tip: get a wedge for your bed so your upper body/head can be elevated. The first 24 hours, when you have to keep the ear cover on, does get a bit painful because the cover is so tight. I would lift it off of my ear (by sticking my finger under the edge of it) to take the pressure off occasionally. I was sore in my neck and shoulder areas after surgery so any natural anti-inflammatory like cinnamon or turmeric might help you (and ibuprofen). My hair was a disgusting, matted mess after surgery. I think the antiseptic they use to clean the skin was dried into my hair, which made things worse. Maybe you can ask them to minimize that somehow for you. lol Overall, it was totally bearable and 100% worth it!

Please keep us posted!

Best,
Stephanie

Thank you! I have all the same apprehensions as you did. So happy that they were unfounded and that you're happy with how everything turned out. My operation was last Tues and everything went well. Looking forward to my follow up appt to see exactly where the implant is located! Obviously I know basically where it is but not sure where exactly the magnet is. Ha!

Your wound looks GREAT to just be a week past surgery. Based on my own experience, the larger, swollen area at the bottom (about mid-ear) is where the vibrating mechanism of the implant is located and your magnet will be above that. My pics might help you guesstimate where your magnet is.
In my first picture (the wound), the mid-ear section looks like yours--it's protrudes more than the other areas. Then in the second image, you can see that my magnet pad and sound processor are above that.
Glad you're through the hard part! 🙂

So sorry to hear that you're going through this, @bdurel. I can only go from my own experience, but I think you're doing the right thing by being proactive and looking at your options. I went deaf in my right ear in October 2020 and had my surgery in January 2021. For me, hearing was critical and being deaf in my right ear and not hearing well in my left ear while trying to maintain my social and professional responsibilities meant that I needed to research options and get moving. I don't think people understand how devastating, isolating, and difficult dealing with hearing loss is. Further, because so many people don't get help, there's a lack of public awareness about hearing loss and how to best deal with it. If you had vision issues, you'd go get some contacts or glasses.

Hang in there! I remember scouring the internet for information and testimonials, just like you. Please ask any questions that you may have!

Best,
Stephanie

I have bilateral otosclerosis and failed stapedectomy surgery. My nerve conduction is near normal. My ENT doctor is suggesting unilateral Osia 2 BC implant. My question is, since my hearing loss is bilateral, would it be appropriate to have bilateral bone conduction hearing aids implants. Thanks for any input you can provide.

Hi @thomashaus -- I'm not sure about your specific situation, but there is a woman on TikTok who has had Osia implants put on both sides of her head, so it is an option if your doctor thinks you're a good candidate. I found her videos when I was searching for info about the Osia. I found her by typing "Osia 2" into the TikTok search bar.

Very helpful...thanks for posting your pictures. Do you recall how long it took for your skin to "feel" back to normal (if it has yet)? Or maybe better question, how long before the numbness, weird feeling eased up? Thanks again.

I watched the TicTok videos that Stephanie mentioned and found them very informative.

Did anyone here have their Osia surgery in California?

Thanks Stephanie. I’ll check that out. I believe insurance has allowed me to have bilateral implants. Scheduled for May 17. Very excited to hear the things I thought I would never hear again.
