CKD Stage 3 after partial nephrectomy for LOT tumor
I had a partial nephrectomy for removal of a mass which turned out to be a non-cancerous LOT tumor. Low eGFR after surgery but no follow-up. One year later, I got regular blood work done (repeated) and my eGFR is consistently at 57-59 and I have been diagnosed with Stage 3 CKD. I was referred to a nephrologist who says it happened during my surgery and that most people bounce back but I did not (“one bad day”). My surgery was apparently unremarkable and my kidney blood supply was stopped for 20 min - well within range. I just don’t understand how I ended up with permanent kidney damage (I am otherwise healthy with no CKD indicators like high blood pressure or diabetes; normal weight) and I am scared by the diagnosis. Any thoughts are appreciated.

@christine15 welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I’m sorry that I don’t know what a non-cancerous LOT tumor is. I also don’t do well with acronyms. But I am way too familiar with eGFR and CKD. My eGFR has bounced between 14 - 42 since 2016. My Dr. told me that I mainly had CKD stage 4. Currently the eGFR is 34 and I have CKD stage 3. You mentioned that your “eGFR is consistently at 57 - 59”. That is really pretty good. I also saw that you had a partial nephrectomy. Some people have only 1 kidney (born that way or have generously donated one). My daughter donated a kidney to her grandfather when she was 19. Her birthday was yesterday and she is 42. She is doing well. I want to encourage you that you can live well with Stage 3 CKD. Do you have any questions about how best to do that? There are lots of discussions here and member with lots of experience.
