Chronic tongue and lip biting while eating

Posted by chiefd67 @chiefd67, Aug 31, 2022

I have been biting my tongue, inside my upper and lower lips, and inside my cheeks for well over a year now. I went to the VA and they
assumed it was a dental issue and would not refer me to a specialist. I went to my dentist and she wanted to put crowns over perfectly good teeth to "see if that would work." I do have cervical degenerative disc disease and nerve issues for about 50 years now. I googled and found out that in the brain there is a section called "pons" that controls a few functions, chewing is one of them. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if so what was done to stop the biting and if it had anything to do with the brain (pons)? What specialist would I go to to get testing, and should I go to Mayo since not many doctors I have been to know anything about my problem? Thanks!

I have progressive neurological diseases. As they progress, the same problems are happening to me. It’s gotten worse & it’s very painful. I’m 71. This didn’t happen when I was younger. I have fractures in L1, L2, & L3, stenosis from L1 to S1, but I don’t think these issues are the cause. I think it’s the neurological diseases. As they progress, this unintentional biting is much worse & more intense.

How do I find out if I have progressive neurological diseases?
I am 64 & this lip and tongue biting is getting worse and I can not imagine having to live the rest of my life with this problem.
I'm here for help & suggestions.

I’ve had Long Covid for a couple years now, which has caused some neurological problems. I’ve been having this chewing/biting issue from time to time since then. I think I’m chewing normally but then suddenly I find I’m biting the inside of my lips and cheek. It’s weird.

Interesting! I’m long Covid and have been accidentally biting my lower lip while eating! I have no clicking sound in my jaw when that happens. Not sure what the reason is, but it’s very painful!

I have been biting the inside of my cheeks quite often. It results in a painful sore. It almost feels like all of a sudden my jaw makes an awkward chew motion and bang, the bite. I would be interested to know whether others have had this problem and found solutions other than chewing really slowly and carefully. By then the food has gone cold and needs to be re-heated.

I've been doing more cheek-biting since my Seizure attacks/PD flare-up in late '23, early '24. And more teeth-scrubbing with my tongue, so I always seem to have a swollen tongue.......and that's about when eating b ecame a problem: I stopped it, almost completely (eating food, that is) I'm pretty much getting by with nutritional supplements (liquid) since everything typically feels dry to my tongue, "tastes like cardboard" has become a normal complaint, and I hav e even had to spit out food, because I couoldn't convince my bfrain to swallow the dry, tasteless whatever. Also highly sensitive to highly spiced foods...they hurt my whole mouth.
Any answers as to what's happening????

Ask your physician to check your medication to see if any are using dry mouth. It’s terrible when I go to the dentistand have my mouth open for cleaning or fillings. Dry mouth is a problem to swallow S nothing goes down easily.

I have a lot of anxiety and take medicine for it. I believe my lip biting is related to anxiety.

I also have to have some dental work done, so that might be related to my problem.

I hate it when it happens, and it seems to happen several times at one meal.

yes, i have tongue and mouth biting to. very painful and frustrating. i have s 1, l 4, l 5, thoracic pain and recent surgery on my neck. i had covid (2022) for 6 weeks and nothing since. i don't know what to do. it must have something to do with the brain because my mouth is out of synchronization with the rest of me.

Colgate's Peroxyl Mouth Sore Rinse for healing might be helpful to use to help heal the sores.
I even used Orajel toothache gel, applied to the tip of my tongue which can split, to decrease pain.
I usually apply this at bedtime to numb the pain. I also have degeneration disc disease throughout my spine. This has nothing to do with biting the inside of your mouth/lip/tongue/teeth scrubbing.
Rule out a TMJ issue, it "could" be the culprit, must see a specialist in this field - not your general dentist.
My bottom line is I believe this is all anxiety related...and as it progresses actually becomes an OCD behavior. Again, Obsessive Compulsion Disorder is an anxiety disorder. If this is your case, I would see a psychiatrist to discuss anti-anxiety medications. Anti-depressants are the first line defense treatment for anxiety...as anxiety & depression are often referred as "twins". If you have one disorder - you have the other also.
With regards to difficulty swallowing...you must discuss with your PCP who must refer you to a GI (gastroenterologist) specialist.
One must rule out any masses/tumors blocking your esophagus causing you discomfort and you will need GI testing for this. This is very important to do and should be done asap. Also, the advice to rule out a dry mouth important also. There are lots of medications for this condition - over the counter or prescriptions.
Your general dentist can help you with this.
If all is thankfully clear with your GI tests - in my opinion, it is another anxiety symptom. If you have a tendency to "choke" on food, especially something that can be difficult to chew (i.e. a tough steak). You will gradually develop a "fear" of swallowing, thinking you will choke on food and soon this extends to even soft foods.
Again, this becomes an OCD behavior/anxiety disorder. Also, another thought. I am on cancer medication - Anastrozole by mouth - daily. It is causing the inside of my bottom lip to be very sensitive and it always feels like it is "blistered" (side effect) another possible reason for mouth discomfort, a medication is the culprit.
And one last thought. I wear a retainer every night for TMJ disease...I recently lost a lot of weight and feel the retainer is now too big for my mouth & rubbing on the inside of my mouth. Such mouth guards/devices can easily cause mouth sores. I will be seeing my specialist for an adjustment in 2 weeks.
Just some thoughts to everyone (myself included) who is experiencing very annoying & painful mouth discomfort. I hope all find the answers to their mouth dilemma and can get proper treatment to resolve this very uncomfortable health issue.

i went to the dentist today and told her what was going on in my mouth. she suggested that the biting
disorder could be related to poor posture. makes sense because its related to your spine. my wife told me that after my neck surgery my posture had slumped forward. anyway hopefully someone has the answer to this problem.

I also believe anxiety causes these sort of issues... I find deep breathing (inhale through nose, hold 7 sec & exhale thru mouth w lips pursed). Do this in a quiet place continuously till completely relaxed. I do this during my daily devotional visit with Jesus (most important!). This, along with calming essential oil infused lotions/ointments (Peppermint/Eucalyptus/Vicks work for me). This routine also helps calm my small fiber neuropathy. I wish everyone struggling with anxiety to try. For devotional recommend "Jesus Calling" & "Jesus Listens". Oh, & additionally, soothing music during meditation. Wishing all a good life!
