Chronic nerve pain (central sensitization) worse with pregnancy?
Hi,
I have had Central Pain Amplification Syndrome (also called central sensitization, I think) for several years, but it’s been worse this past year. I am now a few months into pregnancy and the pain is pretty consistent. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Any advice?
We were a bit nervous going into the pregnancy but after 2 doctors telling me that the pain typically goes away during pregnancy, I felt comfortable moving forward.

Hello @kturrell,
I'd like to invite @rwinney, @darby413, @sue15, and @mellyinca who have all talked about have central pain or central sensitization syndrome in the following discussion:
"Central sensitization syndrome and treatment?"

@kturrell, when you mention the pain has been consistent, has it been consistently worse or it just has maintained it's level from before becoming pregnant? Was there evidence or some data that pointed towards the possibility of the pain going away during pregnancy? If you are comfortable sharing, how are you, and the baby, otherwise doing?
@JustinMcClanahan
The flare ups have been more frequent since becoming pregnant.
Yes, I had 2 doctors (my Pain doctor and obgyn) say the condition would very likely go away during pregnancy- I assume due to hormones).
Frequency and pain had significantly increased in the past year, so I’m not entirely sure if recent changes are pregnancy related or just increasing symptoms, but interesting timing.
Other than the pain syndrome the pregnancy is going great!
@JustinMcClanahan Thank you for the invite. I will certainly check it out. Thanks. I just learned there are 13 treatment centers in our country. New fact!
@sue15 hi.
Where are these treatment centers and what do they do?
Thanks!
Just read there are 18. Centers: Mayo Clinic, the Spero Clinic in Arkansas, including other countries. You can look at their sites for more info: the Spero clinic.com. University of Utah has an EDS Department. Often, top Universities have a department or clinic d noted to EDS. Check Ehler’s-Danlos.com.
Hi @kturrell! I was wondering how you were doing. I’m about to do an embryo transfer but have had many flare ups due to pain in my back and have tingling in my feet possibly from a just recently discovered l5-s1 protusion. My sensitization was caused by facial pain(nose) but since I have several different pains now I’ve gotten bouts of sensitization.

All the best with the transfer!
The cause of my central sensitization pain is unknown unfortunately. I was told by 2 doctors that the pain would likely go away during pregnancy but it definitely hasn’t. The flare ups had become more frequent over the past year and have recently become even more frequent. I’m a few months pregnant. Again, hard to say if the increase is pregnancy related or not, but certainly not going all.
