Chronic Muscle Spasms
I have a long history of trap (cervical, shoulders) spasms. I call spasms because I don't know what else to call them. Had an ACDF C4 - C7 that cured upper left extremity radiculitis. Didn't touch the spasms, as I was hoping. Does anyone know how muscle spasms are diagnosed? I like to think if we know the cause, can sometimes be fixed. Thank you.

Sorry you are still dealing with spasms…they are to diagnose and treat…I get them and my osteopath helps a lot, so they are less painful…
Sorry you are still dealing with spasms…they are to diagnose and treat…I get them and my osteopath helps a lot, so they are less painful…I tend to gather tension in my diaphragm, so breathing exercises help, long slow exhales…and doc gives me tailored exercises for my sore spots.
When you say spasm….are you describing a sharp cramp like sensation like in your foot or hand? Or, do you mean where the muscle becomes tight and sore and won’t relax? I had the latter some years ago. Specifically, one in my back that lasted a year.

1 ReactionBotox! I used to have muscle spasms that were so bad I gagged at night.
I was diagnosed by Movement Disorders with cervical dystonia. I’ve had Botox every three months for two years in my shoulders, trapezius, and neck.
I feel so much better. I can turn my head easily, and I can even lift small weights! I am so thankful for Botox.

2 Reactions@celia16 spasms are when a muscle contracts too much, so both tightness and sharp cramp are spasm…I have had both…osteopath and PT help…some people like acupuncture.

1 Reaction@littledelights21 Botox really works for dystonia….so glad you got relief !
@nycmusic
Did you have any specific testing done? Thinking EMGs would show if nerve based. Maybe different degrees of nerve related pain that presents differently? Not pinched nerve pain thank goodness.
I've had steroid shots, helpful. Diazepam is indicted for spasm, but not helpful. Low dose 5mg. Muscle relaxants. Acupuncture hasn't helped. PT a few times, stretching.... some help.
I still like to think if it can be diagnosed, it can be fixed!!: ) Thank you nyc. : )
@celia16
No, not generally crampy. Although have had neck cramps, quick and over on a few occasions. Tight and sore as you mentioned. Did you receive a definitive diagnosis? Did they determine the cause? Specific treatment? Thank you so very much. Glad you are well. : )
@littledelights21
Thank little. : ) There's another post same treatment as you with Botox. That's wonderful it works. I see a pain doctor, doesn't do Botox. I don't know why. Take best of care. : )
@hmcski , yes, well, I was actually treated by a neurologist. He wasn’t sure what caused it. He prescribed PT consisting of trigger point therapy, heat therapy, electrical stimulation, etc. Nothing would make it let go. I stood in my doorway and banged my back into the doorframe in attempts to make it release. The doctor and therapists said they could feel it, but it was stubborn. Finally, he referred me to ortho for a botox injection. My insurance denied but before my appointment to get it anyway, it released! So far it hasn’t returned. I’d get botox without delay if it happens again.
