Catheter tips for two to three days post procedure HoLEP

Well... "pleasant" isn't a word I'd usually associate with a foley catheter (😵‍💫), but the experience shouldn't be too bad. Here are a few tips:
1) Unless otherwise directed by your surgeon, leave yourself plenty of slack when you tape the tube to your leg. (After some procedures a surgeon might want a bit of traction to help limit bleeding, so ask).
2) Make sure that the catheter tube itself is securely connected to the clear drainage tube leading to the bag. Sometimes staff may not fully jam it into place, and a disconnected tube in the middle of the night is no fun.
3) Up to you to determine if boxers or briefs are more comfortable for you.

Are you sure you will need the catheter? Lots of HoLEP surgeons do a trial void soon after the procedure and if you pass, no catheter is needed. Most of the patients the doctor I saw do not need a catheter and go home the same day

Twice I’ve had catheters. Once for 8 days following a Rezume procedure and overnight with the Holep. Get some stretch bandage material. If what they do at the hospital isn’t comfortable, just refasten the tube to where it’s comfortable. Not a big deal, nor is the removal.

You might consider asking your doctor about self-catherization. I did that for a few months before my HoLEP back in 2020 or 2021. For me it was pretty easy to do and I thought much better than wearing a bag. I even did it at a truck stop driving to Chicago, where my procedure was done by Dr. Amy Krambeck at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, from my home state about 8 hour away. But I did not have to do any kind of catherization right after my procedure and going forward. I was able to void before I left the hospital and had no more problems then or to this date. Thankfully! Dr. Krambeck did a great job and I highly recommend her.

The good side effect is that I urinate like a teenager. After years of a few drops here and a few drops there. Regarding sex, everything is great, except the fact that youhave retrograde ejaculation. For me that means I have a great orgasm but very little comes out my penis. That’s because In doing the HoLEP, it allows your ejaculate to go backwards into your body rather than out your penis. Just a plumbing issue. I still have a lot of pre-ejaculate, but not much at the point of orgasm. it probably lessons the sensation of orgasm a little bit, but sex is still great.
