Inperson & online programs for caregivers and people with dementia

Posted by joisey @joisey, Apr 7 9:32pm

Attending this free 6 week zoom course given by Dr. Noel from Memory Care in Asheville, NC is the single best thing that I have done for myself. I now know so much about the brain and am therefore no longer perplexed as to why my husband can read a book but not carry out 2 sequential instructions. And the practical suggestions as to how to deal with dementia behaviors are terrific. Each module has a pdf that you can refer to in perpetuity. The next quarterly session begins on Thurs 4/10. Contact Mary Donnelly email network@memorycare.org

Intergenerational program
My husband and I live in a 55+ building. We miss having contact with people younger than us. I found a terrific program out of the Scripps Gerontolgy Center at Miami U in Ohio that matches students with seniors for weekly 30 min zooms. We have been matched with the most delightful young woman. If interested, contact Krysta Peterson. falasckm@miamioh.edu

Dementia mentor program
Through Duet in AZ, I have been paired with a dementia mentor. Who knew?? She's wonderful. I so look forward to our weekly 30-60 min zoom sessions. If interested, go to duetaz.org

@joisey, you sound like you've found some helpful programs to assist you and your husband living with dementia.
- Caregiver College 6 week zoom course
- Intergenerational program
- Dementia mentor program

I merged your posts into one discussion here called: In person programs for Caregivers of people living with dementia https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/caregivers-college/

I encourage other members to list programs that have helped them in their local areas.

@joisey, what helped you find these programs?

Colleen, I found out about Caregivers College because I live in NC and perhaps heard of it through the NC Dementia Alliance, as it is given through Memory Care in Asheville, NC. I signed up for their Tues afternoon dementia caregiver support group zoom, which is terrific, and those who took Caregivers College sang its praises.

I found out about the mentor program from someone in the Mayo Clinic Caring for the Caregivers zoom. The mentor program is given through duetaz.org

Most likely found out about Mayo Clinic support group, as well as the intergenerational program, through the email that I received from the NIH, NIA, Alzheimer's Assn, and whatever else I have signed up to receive. I know that I need the support. And I have also participated in a number of caregiver support studies that have been quite beneficial.

Thanks for combining all of the posts. I am not tech savvy.

Cognitive Stimulation Program (CST)

My husband, who is in the early stage of Alzheimer's, takes an on-line class called CST that is offered by LiveWell in CT. Excellent. He really comes off of this 50 min zoom energized and engaged. Worth every penny. email Brian. bconnolly@livewell.org

On-line Virtual Cafe

My husband, who is in the early stage of Alzheimer's, and I, participate in an absolutely delightful Virtual Cafe on Fri from 11-noon. It's free. Participants can be both the caregiver and person with cognitive issues, just the caregiver, or just the person with challenges. Given by LiveWell in CT and hosted by the warm, funny Brian Connolly. Contact him at bconnolly@livewell.org Hope to see you there!

We're also blessed down here in SWF:

We have The Dubin Center (Fort Myers), which runs several free support programs -- in person and via Zoom -- and has a wealth of other resources for individuals / families dealing with the many aspects of Alzheimer's disease and dementia care. AND the administration / staff are superb!
