Cardiac Amyloidosis

My husband had been told that he will need to have bypass surgery on his amyloid heart. The blockage is called the widow maker and we would like to know how successful this surgery for cardiac Amyloidosis or if anyone has had the surgery.

Is it your understanding that the two conditions are related? I'm not in the medical field, so my question is one of curiosity. I believe the bypass is to correct a blocked artery, in this case the left anterior descending (LAD, also known as 'the widowmaker.'). The amyloidosis is, I would think, an unrelated condition where some of the heart's muscle proteins are amyloidized, which makes them less able to function as myocytes, and this results in vessel wall thickening and stiffening.

Yes, you have it correct! I was inquiring if any other people on Mayo Connect have gone through the bypass surgery with also having cardiac Amyloidosis. Some surgeons have not operated on an Amyloid heart. My husband currently is seeing an Amyloid Wild Type specialist at Mayo. We hope to see how other patients have managed this surgery.
