CAR-T after MM relapse 13 months post-ASCT

Posted by jrbris23 @jrbris23, May 5, 2025

Hi everyone, looking for some advice on pursuing CAR T after a fairly quick (13 month) relapse of multiple myeloma light chains numbers trending up post stem cell transplant. I’m feeling strong and back to a near-normal life so frustrating to feel like I’m starting another arduous process. Would love any success stories on CAR T in this type of relapse situation or any alternative paths people have succeeded with. Thank you so much!

My husband celebrated his one-year anniversary post CAR T on November 5. He battled with CLL for 13 years, exhausting any further hope for treatment, until a clinical trial was available to him in Canada. He is doing so well. He has more energy now, at age 77, then he did five years ago. It is really miraculous.

Hi @jrbris23 - Just wanted to add a note from my research when CAR-T was being discussed for my CNS lymphoma. Unfortunately I was not able to receive CAR-T. But I learned that CAR-T therapies consist of different agents so it is good to know what agents are used in your treatment facility.

Someone may have a good result with a particular CAR-T regimen while you may be receiving something else. This was a helpful explanation from cancer.gov on some of the CAR-T agents being used. Sending best wishes for a successful treatment.

Hi @caregiverx2 I’m sorry to hear your husband has to go through another type of therapy after his SCT. I know that wasn’t a walk on the beach for him. But occasionally there can be the need for some ‘belts and suspenders’ to get to a full remission. So he’ll now be having a CAR-T procedure to help ‘seal the deal’.
I know you’re a little nervous about him having this procedure, but we’ve got your back!! I think you’ll find information shared in Connect from most other members who have gone through the CAR-T will be very reassuring.

I’d like to introduce you to @ntsimpson, whose husband had Car-T and was back to hiking and playing tennis 3.5 months after his procedure:

How soon will your husband be having his CAR-T procedure?

@loribmt He is tentatively scheduled for his Car-t infusion on Jan. 26. His cells should be back from the lab this week, but he has to finish his second cycle of Blincyto first. January's calendar just got filled up yesterday. They added a bunch of appointments in anticipation of the car-t. At least the holidays will be relatively quiet without a lot of appointments.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone.

Tmharbison. Hi. I also had relapsed from BMT in 2019. Went through Car T Cell (Carvykti) transplant in 2024. Much easier Transplant!! I wish I could have done this one first. You still have to go through the chemo to “clean” you out, but NOTHING like the melphalan and torture I went through for bone marrow. I’m currently in remission from March 2024 til present.
I think it did cause a little more scar tissue in my lungs, for which I’m on oxygen.

Jrbris23: Go for it! I had to do 4 lines of therapy before I was eligible, but that’s what set the numbers right! I have not been on any special meds ( no chemo!) since I got out of the hospital in March 2024.
