Capecitabine side effects are really tough: What helps?

@gc4217 @115 Eating and staying hydrated is important. There were times that I ate my way through nausea. It might not makes sense, but I found nausea is worse on an empty stomach.

@tomrennie yes, I started right after diagnosis setting a schedule drinking water during the day to reach 96oz a day. I now can drink between 96 and 100 oz throughout the day with no problem. It even helped making my bladder hold more before using the restroom. I’m now working on small meals and making sure my skin is moisturized.

@gc4217 no I’m not on mitomycin infusion.
Just the capecitabine and radiation 5 days a week for 6 weeks. They did mention IV chemo for 4 months after I finish with this treatment but hopefully this is all I’ll need.

@tomrennie that’s how I am too usually when I’m nauseated.

Have you consulted a Hemotologist, who is also an Onchologist?

My Oncologist from U of Chicago is also a Hematologist
who treats all kinds of cancers plus blood disorders.

For bleeding gums and mouth, etc I use "BIOTENE"
mouth wash that helped me a lot.

For diarrhea, mere adjusting dosage will not help. Like someone said, the med stays in the system for quite a while.
Take Imodium for Diarrhea and change your diet. Consult a dietician, who works w other care team members for you.
If you don't mind me asking, what kind of cancer or what is your current diagnosis?

If you go to hooded and do a search under the letter "c" for this medication, it gives info about possible side effects and how you can deal w some of them.

@115 how are you feeling? Week 1 down. Keep us updated how your treatments are going. Wishing you the best through treatments. Are you using any nausea medication. They prescribed me Zofran.
