Cannot bend knee after PT worked it so hard!

Posted by cindymattern @cindymattern, Nov 5 6:13am

I have had two sessions of PT and the second time he made me do heel slides and pushed my knee to the point I was screaming and crying. The 45 minute ride home was excruciating and since I have had so much inflammation I have lost all progress. On a blood thinner till Friday so I cannot take Nsaids even sparingly if needed. New PT group today but so scared to get in my car and out due to pain. I honestly feel like he screwed me all up and I already suffer from inflammation issues. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I also see my surgeon this Friday for a follow up.

I too had a physio from hell ! He pushed down on my knee till I cried out , sat up and left !! I changed physiotherapists after that . I take a taxi to physio because the driving back is impossible . Fight for yourself , no one should hurt you that much it does not promote healing or confidence in physiotherapy . I’m so sorry you experienced this

@shandra
I mostly agree. I think I have gotten the best help from a fairly aggressive physical therapist but that doesn't mean subjecting yourself to what you have endured.

I agree, PT should not push to the point you cry in pain. Best to research PT (check reviews, talk with your doctor) with good reputation for your condition. You may have to drive farther than you wish to, but will be worth it in long run. Good luck!

I was tempted to go to a local PT that used weightless techniques. I am going three times a week and it was pretty far away so I went to a closer place that was recommended by my surgeon's office. But I still wonder what it would have been like:

I don't know if there is one of these anywhere near you.

I had a wonderful PT guy, I requested him for both my knees and right shoulder rehab. He always stressed to tell him if he was causing me any pain. You are supposed to feel discomfort, even extreme discomfort as you stretch to your current limit and try to push past it and hold for a little more gain. But you should not have excruciating pain that makes you scream! I agree that past a certain point there is more damage than good. I wonder if some of these ultra aggressive PT's think they are supposed to achieve the equivalent of an MUA without the anesthesia! I would request a different PT person.

I hear you Cindy, and I went through that too. My horrible therapist damaged my back in four places. Do not hesitate to call them on it. Write a formal complaint letter to the therapy company he works for. Spell it out, call it unreasonable and inhumane, and refuse to work with him again. I did those things, but he's still employed. However as I observed him in the succeeding months as I worked with a different therapist, the bad guy had really toned down his approach. So maybe the letter helped someone else. There's just no call for abuse from a medical provider. Don't let anyone hurt you like that. What the surgeon did to you was horrible enough for a lifetime, so the therapists shouldn't be making it worse. Watch out for the after effects. Real damage could have been done. Go easy and be careful. If you get to a point where your knee fails to progress or seems to be in constant pain, get to a sports medicine physician and see if there is bursitis or tendonitis or some other kind of soft tissue damage. If there is, you won't be the first patient to get it. Therapy got my whole leg messed up as well as my back. Sonar shockwave therapy fixed that but it took three extra months and thousands of dollars out of my pocket. Hope you have better luck going forward.

@genie15 Agree. I am in a totally different place now and have my first session Monday. Thankfully at my ten day follow up all is ok with my knee though he pushed it way too far. I really struggle with inflammation and even my PT said that if the inflammation was down I'd have almost 0 degree flexion. I stretched quite a bit last night and not today it really hurts and it sore. Still nauseous from my Xarelto but thankfully last night was the last one and it caused stomach pains and nausea for me. I'm hoping once out of my system that helps things and I can take occasional Aleve to help.
