Can you take ramelteon and melatonin together?

Can you take ramelteon and melatonin together or is it not recommended. A family member is taking both (8mg of ramelteon and 10mg of melatonin, along with .5 Ativan (and trying to taper off) as well as an over the counter valerian spray. She used to just take some melatonin for a number of years, but I think not 10mg. Any thoughts on what is best and how to wean down or off of these. Have suggested CBT, and maybe low dose of melatonin (3mg). Thanks.

I don’t know the answer to your question other than to say it may increase the side effects of both medication‘s. I believe contacting a pharmacist would be your best option. Hopefully, you're using good sleep hygiene.
Take care,

I was prescribed ramelteon and my Dr said not to take melatonin with it because ramelteon acts like melatonin. This is from drugs . com: "Using melatonin together with ramelteon may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating. Some people, especially the elderly, may also experience impairment in thinking, judgment, and motor coordination. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with these medications. Also avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medications affect you. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor."
