Can you recommend a Prostate surgeon or Radiologist at Mayo Rochester?

Posted by Cannondale @tactive, Jul 21 2:36pm

I am 53 years old and have recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, Gleason 3+4 =7

I am considering HDR Brachytherapy vs Prostatectomy. I am concerned with long term side effects.

Therefore I am hoping to get recommendations for a skilled surgeon and/or radiologist at the Mayo clinic (Rochester Minnesota).

My concerns are as follows:
Lowest rate of recurrence
Low rated of incontinence
Low rates of ED

If you had a good experience with a Prostate surgeon or Radiologist at Mayo clinic Rochester MN, could you please share their name and why you recommend the doctor ?

Your thoughts and recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much

Well, first off, you’re doing the right thing by choosing Mayo. The Mayo Clinic is a center of excellence for prostate cancer treatment. I had a prostatectomy at Mayo Phoenix when I was 52 (2 years ago)… also a 3+4=7. In my case, the only real option was surgery. Do your research and ask every question you can think of throughout the process. I also recommend this book.

My story is basically your story. Dr. Paras Shaw https://www.mayoclinic.org/biographies/shah-paras-h-m-d/bio-20483758 did my surgery. Couldn’t recommend him or Mayo highly enough.

He also co-authored a book on Prostate Cancer/Health I highly recommend that is published by Mayo. https://mcpress.mayoclinic.org/product/mayo-clinic-on-prostate-health-3rd-edition/

I had my RARP at Mayo (Rochester) recently. My surgeon was Dr. Matthew Tollefson. I am very happy with the outcome—he is highly skilled and (so far) I’ve had minimal incontinence or other side-effects.

Mayo is a world-class operation, where everyone (doctors, residents, nurses, office staff) works together seamlessly and efficiently. One can sense the pride they take in caring for the patient.

All the best.

@gaelichunter, thank you for the recommendation of your surgeon. How long ago was your surgery? How was your recovery? Side effects?
