Can you go to Mayo Clinic

Posted by cindy1964 @cindy1964, Mar 10, 2020

I have several medical issues. I live in Panama City, Florida. Is it possible to go to Mayo Clinic and just get a full body check to see what’s really wrong with me? We had hurricane Michael and our hospitals don’t even have enough beds to handle the community and a lot of doctors left the area. I’m that patient that seems to have all the unusual things happen and no one properly knows how to heal me. My body rejects so much medication. I have fibromyalgia, RA, Osteoarthritis, diabetic overweight neuropathy my list can go on and on. I just need a full body checkup. There’s a Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville but I’m not sure they take care of all of my needs. Some please help guide me. I’m only 55

I am 53 and live a little over 1 hour north west of you.

Yes you can go to Mayo.

I self referred naming all of the body systems that I had challenges with and what the challenges were. I asked them to put me through a fine tooth comb and tell me everything that I was dealing with and how to best increase my quality of life.

I was diagnosed with Central Sensitization with Fibromyalgia. The Pain and Rehabilitation Program is a lifesaver.

I am returning in July for the 10 day HABIT program.

Have a wonderful day!

Do you have other issues other then fibromyalgia? As you saw in my post I have so many different things wrong I don’t even know where to start. My arthritis doctor is recommending me to go. She said you don’t need a referral but they will request all of my records. The worst problem I have with this is the doctor that was treating me retired and it was before the mandatory computer records went in place. So all of my records from that doctor are gone and that’s when I started getting sick 2003. I had gastric bypass in 2005 and lost 100 pounds. I kept that weight off until 4 years ago I was taken off blood thinner Coumadin and put on Eliquis and the first month I gained 25 pounds. None of my doctors were concerned and continued telling me it wasn’t from the Eliquis. Since then I have gained 60 pounds. The weight and arthritis and fibromyalgia are all working against me and the doctors here don’t even mention it. I’m at a loss. Thank you for reaching out to me.

@cindy1964 I have been a patient at Mayo since 1982. They do not require outside medical records. They will ask if you have brought any outside records or xrays. On your first visit they will ask you lots of questions and ask you about what brought you there. That’s when you can tell them your medical history.
I have never brought any records from my home doctors. Sometimes they will ask you about results of testing you’ve already had done, that way they aren’t repeating something you’ve had done already. They might repeat something if your results of tests were questionable.
Don’t let the lack of medical records stop you from going to Mayo. If you think you might be wanting to go, even if not for a few months, I would call now for appointments as they are extremely busy and it might just take months to get in.
Even though you don’t need a referral, having one will speed up the process. A friend of mine actually had her doctor call Mayo to get her an appointment and she got in in just a week. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn’t, worth a try though.
Good luck to you.

@bonnieh218 Thank you for the response! I imagine that tests beyond a certain age are also something that would not be considered due to changes in equipment and Laboratories. When I had my first few appointments with my Mayo trained doctor, although he is not at Mayo at this time, he looked at biopsy results from Keck USC and Cedar Sinai Hospital's in Los Angeles area. He also looked at test results that had been done in the previous six months but again, changes in Laboratories would make a difference possibly.

I have tried on two occasions to get to see an internal medicine doctor for an overall exam for care regarding multiple medical issues to no avail. They say I don’t meet their criteria and I can be seen at my local clinic for overall care. I am presently diagnosed with chronic migraines, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, bronchiectasis, and osteoarthritis in multiple locations. I think I have them covered. This is at the Rochester, MN clinic. Good luck...perhaps it will be better in Florida😊

I was denied at Mayo last year. I presented chronic migraine, cornea disease - Fuch's dystrophy, cervical arthritis, occipital neuralgia and small fiber polyneuropathy. They cited I could be treated locally. Presently, I'm pending acceptance to Mayo's Pain Rehabilitation program in Jacksonville and it's looking promising. I figure that if I can actually make it through the program...they will be miracle workers! If not, and they realize how bad I think I am, then I'm in the best place possible for reevaluation and assessment.

Same answer I got....I don’t understand as they will accept me for speciality concerns including neurology, Pulmonology, endocrinology, fibromyalgia/fatigue center, endocrinologist, and now the spine center.

I just wonder now with the virus if they are even taking any new patients. Anyone know? I don’t want to travel 5 hours to be turned around.
