Can someone help with X-ray results?

Posted by gravity3 @gravity3, May 22 8:25am

I received these results from X-ray done two days ago. I'd like help understanding.
Space narrowing most pronounced at L3-L4
Advanced facet arthrosis
Trace anterolisthesis L4 L5
Mild scoliosis
Thanks in advance

How bad is your pain? Lower back mainly?

I had x-rays done of thoracic and lumbar spine to check to see if I had more fractures and though no new fractures since 2021, the rest of it was pretty disturbing!

I can't tell much from your report other than that all of these results would cause lower back pain (I googled two), and though "trace," the anterolisthesis could cause nerve pain.

What are your symptoms? Glad you have no fractures but I am sure that is small comfort.

Did your doctor respond? My docs don't seem to bother anymore. Once I hit 70 I am "just old."

gravity3,
arthro means joint
arthrosis is the narrowing of the joint
the facets are the joints at the side of each vertebra
the space at the lumbar joint 3 and 4 is narrowing and probably pinching the nerves esp pain nerves that exit the spine at that level.
At the next lumbar level L4-5, L4 is sliding, very slightly forward over L-5. It's best if they are stacked evenly. Usually it is a weakness of the ligaments that causes the condition. If the sliding becomes advanced it can put pressure against the spinal cord, which is painful and causes stenosis or lack of blood supply of the lower limbs.
Scoliosis is lateral curve in the spine. Yours is mild.
You are looking good on the x-ray. Are you experiencing any pain?

@gravity3 as you know you can google all of these terms (@gently and I did) but without knowing your symptoms it is hard to interpret and that is for your doctor and you. Superficially both @gently and I thought things didn't look too bad but that does not hold if you are in pain and since you had the x-ray, I assume you are.

I am wearing a soft back brace that velcros, today, at this moment. I lifted too much yesterday and should have worn it then. Maybe that would help you! I like Biofreeze and capsaicin patches, and see a PT for massage. Tai chi helps too.

gravity 3, your x-rays look like mine did once upon a time. Be sure and get copies of the images.

Thanks, I will. May not have thought of it without your reminder. Are you willing to say more about your journey with lumbar stenosis? I have been in for two steroid injections. I tolerate pain pretty well so I don't want to do any further steroids unless the pain is unbearable.

More discomfort than what I would term disabling pain. I have a fairly high tolerance but did do two steroid injections. Because I know that they can be hard on the liver I'm being more cautious. Symptoms are some pain and general discomfort doing everything that I used to do without thought like sleep positions, wiping after a bm (did get a bidet attachment), lifting, bending at certain angles, being hugged robustly.
And I totally agree....medical care has changed it's relationship with this 76 yr. old woman. Last time I went to to the spine docs pa his parting advice was just live. Not bad advice in one sense but on reflection later I was and still am miffed. When I go back in two weeks it wii be a different story. I will let him know what I want from our appt even when the time exceeds 10 min.

Thank you both. And for the tips on help with pain and back brace.

@gravity3 I am unable to take a lot of medications for a variety of reasons. I recently saw a holistic doctor and am starting one at a time with Curcumin (Curcu Select), CBD, and PEA/Luteolin select. These are for pain and inflammation. I am also taking Liposomal Glutathione but for a different reason.

Years ago I went to a well-known pain mgmt program and they also recommended Curcumin.

My back brace is at corflex.com. Latex free. I had another one with latex and reacted to it- didn't know I was allergic!

I have a high pain threshold too. Sometimes it can work against us. Like yesterday when I moved stuff and should have stopped!
