Can one stop taking prolia after the first shot?
Hello everyone, my mom is 84 year old and she got osteoporosis since 8 years. She took prolia last October. She started to feel a lot of pain in her legs now. I am thinking she shouldn't take the 2nd shot but I am afraid of the consequences. Did anyone here stop the prolia at an early stage!? If so what happened? Thank you

@gently, my understanding -- and I hope I am absolutely wrong! -- is that the risk of vertebral fracture with discontinuation of Prolia could occur as early as 7 months after the first shot. I would much rather believe that there's no repercussion if you stop after just one shot. Can you tell me who you spoke to at Amgen?
Thanks!
I also have severe osteoporosis and I detest Prolia. My docto has given me the choice of Forteo or Aclasta. I am thinking about going drug free but am at high risk of fracture. -4 .2 and -4.3 in my spine and -3.4 in my hip.
How are you feeling now?
I'm constantly afraid of falling or breaking a bone. At least once a month, I feel like I have a hairline fracture in the ankles and knees and I cannot walk for a few days. This used to happen more often and last longer. Ice and rest help. I wonder if this happens to anyone else.
But I refuse to take any drugs. They all seem to have bad side effects. I might change my mind after my next dexa bone scan, but for now, I'm doing fine trying to do things slow and be careful. No bending or pushing.
Please reconsider. Drugs *may* have side effects. It isn't guaranteed and it isn't even for the majority of people. You know what's a bad side effect? Breaking your hip. For a healthy person, that could mean a hip replacement and months of therapy. For an elderly person, it's a death sentence.
It doesn't sound like you're doing fine, to be honest. It sounds like you're in pain.
Everything I've read says that stopping after one shot is ok. The real issue is what you would do instead of take Prolia.
I recommend Forteo (or Tymlos.) Your numbers are very low. You need to get out of the danger zone.
Thank you for the input! Yes, I’m thinking Forteo.
Thanks for your comment. All of my pain is from cancer treatment side effects accept the once a month slight hairline fracture in the knee. I can live with that!
The side effects from the Prolia made my life debilitating. It triggered neuropathy with leg cramps and bone pain lasted longer than usual. It twisted the limbs where pain was beyond what I could take and no medicines that didn't knock me out completely would work.
Since changing my lifestyle and increased physical therapy and nutritional changes, I will see if the bone density scan doesn't improve. If not, I will def try the Prolia again. I am at high risk for the other drugs, but sometimes new meds are available to check.
I had taken several shots and had to miss an injection before a hip replacement. The next to shots seemed to inflame the neuropathy in my feet. So I quit taking the injection, 3 drs knew I went off of it, I saw an orthopedic dr and she sent me to. Rheumatologist at the Cleveland Clinic based on my bone scan the rheumatologist said I never should have been put on Prolia and told me my bones deteriorate more. She recommended to have a reclast injection I might not need to take anything. My report last August was-2.1. so I would look into switching to reclast it didn’t seem to bother the neuropathy.

I do not know how old you are.
If you have knee arthritis, you need to build up the muscles in the ankles and knees.
Have you considered one on one osteoporosis PT classes?
Are you dealing with plantar fasciitis in your ankle?
