Can hashimotos cause a high platelet count and low mean cell hemoglob?

Posted by meganpeters013 @meganpeters013, 1 day ago

I was recently diagnosed with hashimotos in June my past two blood panels with platelet count were high and my mean cell hemoglobin keeps lowering.. now my hemoglobin is also low. My doctor doesn’t think the two are connected. I’ve experienced the normal symptoms with hashimotos like hair loss, fatigue, weight gain and have had a hard time controlling my body temperature I’m either too hot or cold.. I do experience muscle fatigue and pain sometimes at night or it can go on for 3 days. I’ll be seeing a hematologist but I just wanted to see if anyone experiences the same with the condition

I have Hashimoto’s and not sure if it causes what you are seeing in your bloodwork. It is good you are seeing a hematologist.

What you are seeing in your bloodwork could be due to inflammation, infection, anemia and/or nutritional deficiencies. There is also a potential for bone marrow involvement.

Hashimoto’s is your own body attacking/damaging thyroid cells. Do you have thyroid issues and autoimmune diseases that run in your family? My mom had Hashimoto’s, hypothyroidism, heart disease, diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.

My good friend has Hasimoto’s and has the same symptoms you describe. She also has problems with her shoulders popping out of joint. Seems unrelated but is more prevalent in Those with Hashimoto’s. Diet and excercise seem to help her. She is gluten free and excercises daily. The excercise seems to have made a big difference. Wishing you success on relieving your symptoms. The

Since you already have been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, my guess would be that now you also have Hypothyroidism. I also suffer from this and you will need to be put on medication if your Thyroid Panel comes back high. I have both Hashimoto’s and Hypothyroidism and started on a high dose of Synthroid and Cytomel and have now been weened to just 75 mcg of Synthroid and taken completely off Cytomel. I too was experiencing hair loss, fatigue, weight gain. I also have Long Covid, so it was hard to determine where this was coming from, until I had a blood test for my thyroid. Getting on medication will help a lot. You will need the medication for life.

@dlydailyhope my grandma is the only one in my family I’m aware of that had hypothyroidism she was never formally diagnosed with hashimotos. My family does have a history of diabetes, ms and cancer. My doctor also highly recommended me to see a genetic doctor to do the testing to see if it could potentially be genetic

@lkirnbauer my doctor recently started me on Levo because my thyroid levels were normal so she started me on a very low dose but I did have to get it adjusted so she put me on 25 mg I do go back in October to see if I need to have a larger dose I could every 6 weeks and get bloodwork my doctor has been very helpful with that. It’s been very difficult for me to get advice expect for online groups because I’m the only one in my family currently that has hashimotos. My grandma had hypothyroidism but she passed back in 2015.

I would guess that you will eventually be testing positive for Hypothyroidism, as it is hereditary. Your doctor should be instructing you on what to do. I would also eliminate eating gluten, dairy and soy products, as they cause inflammation in the body. I’ve been eating this way for over 2 years and it’s made a huge difference. I have Hashimoto’s with Hypothyroidism.

Diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease and Hypothyroidism in early 20’s, traced back to grandparents on both sides, mother’s siblings, and her children. My thyroid replacement always a yo-yo effect for many, many, years until starting Tirosint, a thyroid hormone replacement specifically for Hashimoto’s Disease which stabilized my dosage so no more yo-yo effect. Once your treatment is working the hair loss, fatigue, and weight gain, etc, will go away.
AGREE & appreciate the reply from @ikirnbauer of removal of inflammatory food from diet with successful outcome. Also, find it most helpful if I write a list of all my questions to bring with me to dr visits for complete understanding. Wishing you well and feeling better soon.
