Can fibromyalgia affect your speech?
I am new to the diagnosis of fibromyalgia and have been trying to educate myself. Last week I went to the emergency room because I suddenly was lisping, had difficulty breathing, dizziness and elevated blood pressure. I have never lisped before but my mouth is not functioning as it usually has. It feels like my jaws are not aligning. I am not crazy, this really happened and is continuing. Nothing wrong dentally. But of course, the ER could not find anything wrong with me, and my primary care physician asked if I were depressed and seemed to indicate that I was malingering. So has anyone else had fibromyalgia affect their speech?

I have had fibromyalgia recently diagnosed as well but have had symptoms for 5 years. My brain knows what to say but when I am very tired and brain fog sets in my words can come out wrong and I stutter. I also have had trouble breathing in the past, before my diagnosis and nothing was found to be wrong. I think people just think it's just a chronic pain condition but there's loads of other symptoms. It's probably more unusual having your problem but fibro affects us in different ways. I have had the feeling of my jaw being stiff and creaky and very painful but it sorts itself out until it happens again. I also suffer with weak esophagul motility and GORD. My pain consultant here in London asked me if I had pain in my jaw while doing the checklist for fibromyalgia so I think it's definitely another fibromyalgia problem unfortunately. I have been through most hospital departments with various symptoms other than chronic pain before getting diagnosed.
It is a real symptom so don't be fobbed off. My consultant knows what he's talking about because he has done research on fibromyalgia and totally gets it.

1 ReactionNot directly but a medication i was taking for fibro caused tardive dyskinesia (involuntary muscle movement disorder). It can affect any muscle area, for me it was my tongue & I had to work to pronunciate. It got so bad that at 1 appt Dr thought I was having a stroke. They took me off the med & it mostly went away. Serotonin Syndrome was another diagnosis they considered, also caused by meds.
Brain fog, aka fibro fog, is real & can cause you to just speak slow & quiet. A medication I was taking for fibro caused tardive dyskinesia (involuntary muscle movement disorder).
