Burning urethra and vaginal atrophy

Posted by srb6 @srb6, 3 days ago

In February I was having terrible burning urethra pain and ultimately diagnosed with vaginal atrophy (I’m 66 and had total hysterectomy 7 years ago) and started on Estradiol cream twice a week in Feb.
It’s much better now (July) but not completely gone. I still get slight burning urethral twinges every? 3 days or so multiple times a day. I can live with it but just wondering should I be expecting this to ever stop? I never had anything like this prior to February.

Since you would need to wipe the urethra whenever restrooming it might not be getting the full benefit of the estradiol. Has the doctor considered an estradiol patch? That would be systemic and might do more for the urethra.

The cream is inserted vaginally at bedtime so theoretically it has done its job by morning after most of it comes out. They didn’t mention that a patch was available but got the impression they were trying to avoid a systemic solution.
So are you saying I should expect for these sensations to stop? Thanks for your reply.

@srb6 Sorry, I don’t know if it would stop the sensations. I had used vaginal estradiol in the past, and for me, it just dripped out so I didn’t think it did much for the urethra. By the time estradiol patches were used more often my sister got breast cancer and they would no longer prescribe estradiol for me. Then I got breast cancer, so there was no question about it for me.

Thank you. Hope you both are better now.

I did have this issue with burning and I was diagnosed with vulvodynia. I am currently on Estradoil and my dr put me on amitriptyline compound cream. That works well.
Hope this helps.

I had the same experience until I started using the cream directly on the urethra every night before bed. Initially, I experienced some stinging from the direct application, but it eventually subsided. Now I have no uncomfortable urethral sensations. I continue to use a small amount every night. As a bonus, I haven't had a UTI since using the cream in this way.

I had same. Was advised to use estradiol cream 2x week, but could still feel some discomfort.
I started using it daily and doctor said that was okay.

I thought about that but to be honest with you I have trouble finding it to put the cream there. But I will try again.

So now you don’t feel it at all? You use 1 gram per night?
Thanks

@srb6 I also have vaginal atrophy. The burning stopped once I started drinking 2 liters of water a day. I use unscented soap…dove unscented or something organic. I rinse that area with cold water before leaving the shower…making sure no soap residue is left. I switched toilet paper. No more Scott.. I use Ultra Gentle toilet paper just to tap with … and use a Bidet, that I bought on Amazon to rinse with after urinating or bowel movement’s. That really helped. I’m not sure if you’re in relationship…but sex is out of the question…that will bring the irritation all back. I hope this helps. Blessings, Rose
