Budesonide nabulizing
Good morning. My pulmonologist changed albuterol to levalbuterol inhaler because of heart palpitations and high pulse. I must say it helps to certain degree. She also wants me to start budesonide nebulizing at the end of the lung clearance ( levalbuterol then 7% sodium chloride then vest and aerobika). If you used budesonide how bad was it as far as thrush? I used symbicort until January when it was stopped during my visit to NJH. I am honestly reluctant to start steroids inhaled but I have often tight chest. It’s not easy to have two sets of doctors.

I was diagnosed about two months ago with bronchiectasis. I've used the albuterol/budesonide nebulizer treatment since my diagnosis. I changed pulmonologists who added the 7% saline with the Aerobika. My throat has been sore on and off and I did get oral thrush. I was prescribed a Nystatin swish and swallow solution which helped. It's been almost two weeks since I stopped using it and so far so good....but I am cautiously optimistic.
I was diagnosed with aspergillus, pseudomonas and MAC and BE in 2022. They put me on antifungal (clotrimazole I believe) for 3 months. The first month of treatment was tough, they prescribed nebulizing budesonide to help me. It did, the last 2 months of antifungal caused me no issue whatsoever and I felt super great, O2 at 98, feeling completely fine, lots of energy. My pneumologist was very impressed, he told me to stay on budesonide, and that we would not treat pseudomonas and MAC because I was doing extremely well. Fast forward to dec 2023: I had a major event of hemoptisis, it is not clear what triggered it. they said maybe the budesonide, maybe the pseudomonas, may be the MAC. I do believe Budesonide helped me some last year, but now i am off of it and doing great. while on budesonide, I did not get a thrush.
What is the reason the pulmonologist added budesonide after levalbuterol/saline, vest, airway clearance?
Budesonide is a steroid. The reason to use a steroid is usually because you have asthma in addition to everything else.
Do you have MAC? It is my understanding that those with MAC should not use steroids.
Regarding thrush, with steroids you do need to be careful. Rinse your mouth well immediately after nebbing the budesonide. Getting the rinse mentioned above is a good idea as is eating yogurt a couple times a day, letting it sit in your mouth before swallowing.
I am still treated for MAC. I had tight chest all the time so she said I must have inflammation. That’s why Budesonide. I will also email NJH regarding this although it takes them a long time to answer
Thank you for sharing. Every new med makes me anxious. I want to feel better and I do taking it but still I have concerns. NJH clearly says no inhaled steroids if there is no asthma- I have mild asthma but of course my lungs are damaged so maybe this is why Budesonide helps
My asthma was well controlled. But the antifungal was really rough and it gave me all kinds of spasms: in my legs, panic attacks, and so forth, during the 1st month. I think they prescribe routinely the budesonide with the antifungal. It helped me tremendously then. and the pneumologist didn't want to change anything about my routine with budesonide (I rinsed with salt water each time after use) after I was done with the antifungal, allegedly to suppress the inflammation in my lungs. Unfortunately then nobody told me about airway clearance and nebbing saline. But all that changed when I went to a NTM specialist this year in a different hospital. Knowledge is power. It's crazy the difference nebbing 3% saline did and does for me. I am not currently taking any antibiotics and would really like to keep it that way. Best wishes Liliana with everything!
I also got thrush so I quit using
Did you rinse gargle and brush your Tarth right away? Or your immune system was weak?
