Bronchiectasis: pls help me help her
My best friend was diagnosed with ILD, AID, heart disease and a host of other issues in 2021. Unfortunately, she crossed paths with an incompetent Pulmonologist in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. There are so many questionable things that he did...the most egregious, perhaps being not prioritizing her care. Years later, she's learning that he really didn't do what he should have for her at the onset, and he hasn't done very much to monitor the progression of her disease...and that frightens and saddens all of us. She's 86 years old, and she needs answers.
For about 5 months, she has had a deep cough she can't get rid of. Shes felt weak, not much appetite, no fever.
Shes been to her primary, to urgent care and the aforementioned Pulmonologist. They keep putting her on azithromycin, but it doesn't help her. Additionally, when they gave her a steroid, that seemed to suppress the coughing, and when she completed the prescription the coughing was back. The old Pulmonologist said it was pneumonia...the current Pulmonologist (took over, from same department/hospital) diagnosed her with Bronchiectasis. He put her back on azithromycin 500mg 3x/wk, mucinex dm tablets, sodium chloride 3% 2×daily. She is no better. And she is suffering. Her wheezing has gotten so much worse...I'm afraid. At her most recent visit with her Rheumatologist, he was angry (!!) because he felt that her lung doctors weren't 'doing their jobs. I don't know how to process that or how to sit here and do nothing, say nothing and watch her decline, suffer. I still need her.
We are in Baton Rouge Louisiana and need recommendations from the group for pulmonologists, and rheumatologists (specifically autoimmune specialty) in the area, if you have any.
Additionally, we are trying to decide where best to go for evaluation and expert consult, NJH or Mayo? Elswhere? Thanks in advance for ANY help you can provide. Sorry so long, but I'm feeling like whatever I get here might be more valuable than anything we've gotten elsewhere thus far. Many thanks in advance.
