Bronchiectasis and vape smoke

Posted by cattleya @cattleya, 3 days ago

Hello Everyone. I've read that second hand vape smoke is dangerous for people with Bronchiectasis and mycobacterial infection (mine is M. Abscessus). My husband has been vaping several times a week in the house. He doesn't think it's a problem because I seem to be doing well since I can exercise and I'm not coughing a lot (except I did have Pseudomonas a few months ago which cleared up nicely with Cipro and about a week of Tobramycin). I'm 77 y/o, not on any meds, doing watchful waiting and nebulizing saline solution 1x/day. I've asked him to do it outside but he does it in the middle of the night and doesn't want to be bothered with turning off the alarm system. Does anyone have any good information on Bronchiectasis and second hand vape?

Secondhand vape aerosol (often called vapor) contains nicotine, ultrafine particles, heavy metals, and cancer-causing chemicals, harming bystanders by degrading air quality and increasing risks for respiratory/cardiovascular issues, especially in children, with risks including lung inflammation and potential asthma exacerbation, though long-term effects are still being studied. It's not harmless water vapor; it's an aerosol with potentially dangerous substances that settle on surfaces, creating thirdhand exposure risks, and while generally less harmful than traditional smoke, it's definitely not safe.
Your husband is not only doing serious damage to himself but also you.

@cattleya As I say to others that think the vaping is O.K.....you have just traded one chemical for another.
I second what cwal said, very much so.
Hope your husband can find a way to help himself and you regarding the harm it is doing....it doesn't always show up in the short term.....but watch out for the long term when it does. Not fun.

He does not want to be bothered with turning off the alarm system but you could be greatly bothered by the consequences of second hand smoke on Bronchiectasis. What we with BE have to battle even in a pure air environment is already ALOT. Perhaps he could be educated by reading something from AI or perhaps your Pulmo could speak to him? If it were me, I would insist but that is just me!

If he insists on being inconsiderate of your condition, I would insist he go to another part of the house, close the door, open the window and blow the smoke out. How would he like it if the shoe was on the other foot!
