Broken toe in two places
I am 74. I broke my big toe in two places. I have appointment with a orthopedic podiatrist. It is swollen dealing with bruising but more importantly severe pain on top and pain on inside of foot and bottom. I have to take an opiod to control the pain and it still hurts. Bone did not come through the skin but 7 days later my big toe is still red and unable to move and very painful. My appt is May 19th. Any ideas if I will have to have surgery or probably not. Praying for a good outcome

@linny46514 I have broken toes in the past but not my big toe. A few years ago I broke my second toe and went to my podiatrist. I was never very thrilled with him and in retrospect wish I had gone to the podiatrist who is at the orthopedic clinic. Anyway, the podiatrist I went to took an X-ray, and told me I had one fracture. He set the toe straight and provided me with an orthopedic shoe. It was very painful when walking. It turns out that I had two fractures in the toe, not just the one fracture he set. My toe healed and is crooked so this impairs my gait. Nothing to be done about that now unless I want this addressed surgically which I do not.
You are going to the right place to treat your toe. Hopefully the orthopedic podiatrist will set the toe properly and give you instructions for how to best care for your toe as it heals. Your toe will heal and over time you’ll have less pain.
Will you let me know what happens at your consult on May 17?
