Breathing issues and function results

Posted by michelle11277 @michelle11277, 3 days ago

Hello.. new here…
I started struggling to take deep breaths two weeks ago. I have been to 2 pulmonologists who say they don’t have answers for me..
I did a chest xray that was clear. I also did a pulmonary function test..
I was worried as my MIPS was 53%
My MVV was 50%
When I ask the doctor why these are like this they don’t know. It says I have respiratory weakness on the report annd possible restriction and when I ask why again they said they aren’t sure. I’m only 28 years old and I’m scared.
They denied any diseases when I asked (restrictive lung disease, etc..)and said to take symbicort (even though they said they don’t think it’s asthma).

I guess my question is, could this all be anxiety related and my test results are poor due to sore muscles from gasping for air. I don’t feel heard. I’m a single parent to 3 and the thought of it actually being something bad is keeping me from sleeping, eating or functioning.

Meds I’m on-
Zyrtec
Symbicort
Singular
Albuterol
(Tried steroids & antibiotic last week)
Pepcid
Nasal spray.

I don’t think it is Anxiety. I was told many times nothing was wrong with my lungs. Unfortunately not all doctors or nurse practitioners are great at reading the tests. I finally got someone good and he diagnosed asthma COPD overlap disease.

If you have shortness of breath, it can be heart as well as lungs. You mention "restrictive disease" that would be pulmonary fibrosis as opposed to an "obstructive disease" which is COPD. In any case you should find a good pulmonologist - check their background. They are not all expert in the same things. Go to a teaching hospital if you have one nearby. They do more research.

Anxiety can contribute to your symptoms but there may be something underlying that should be further investigated.

If you are female and young, some doctors don’t take you seriously and chalk everything up to “being in your head.” I fired a doctor who treated me as a hypochondriac when I had spinal cord compression injury causing many symptoms. Make sure to advocate for yourself. You know you best.

Was there any trigger to your breathing issues? Were you sick with a virus recently? I had trouble breathing after each of the Covid shots in 2021 and my X-rays were clear and my doctor thought it was allergies (but I was never diagnosed with allergies and never had this problem before). I ended up having chest pain and woke up several times feeling like I was having a heart attack (actually learned later in ekg that I did have an old myocardial infarction)! I took baby aspirin at the time in case it was. My young son was scared (I am also a single parent and can empathize with you on stress, little sleep, not able to care for yourself easily, etc.). You may want to get your heart and cardiovascular system checked to make sure you do not have any issues contributing to your breathing issues. You may need ultrasound/echocardiogram/MRI to rule out things.

I ended up getting diagnosed with sleep apnea due to extreme fatigue during the day. Do you sleep okay and do you ever wake up gasping for air?

Have you seen your primary doctor to have extensive bloodwork done and have you ever considered medication for anxiety? It helped me to take an antidepressant due to panic attacks and postpartum depression. Your list of medications seems long for someone so youn without an official diagnosis. You may want to review this list with your local pharmacist to see if there are any interactions causing heightened anxiety and if you should consider stopping any (some may be overlapping).

Make sure to get your iron levels checked (full panel, not just CBC) and a full panel for your thyroid. This can contribute to your symptoms. If you have heavy menstrual cycles and if you are vegetarian or vegan, you may be iron deficient/anemic and low in vitamin b12.

I was not sick recently.. didn’t have any major life issues or stressors.
I don’t wake up gasping for air, but I wake up non stop through out the night. Not sure why..
Recently (last 3 days) I’ve started having nonstop twitches , like heartbeats in my limbs. Those wake me up at night. Currently as I’m typing I can feel them in both of my calf’s, both arms and a few random other spots. They came out of nowhere..
My primary said he can’t help me and I have to see pulmonologists, which I’ve already seen two. I take Prozac (started a week ago) it doesn’t do anything.

I feel like I’ve done everything.. tried everything and can’t figure it out. I have lost all quality of life. I have an echo for middle of September and a ct of lungs in a few weeks but the doctor put in notes ‘doubt we will see anything’

I’m scared, alone and don’t know what to do anymore. I haven’t been working, not eating, I force myself to sleep the second I’m able to, I don’t want life to be this way.

I tried Prozac and it caused me brain zaps and needed to stop taking it. Have you tried Wellbutrin/bupropion or Zoloft/sertraline.

I checked AI on muscle twitches/pulsating to see what it summarized as potential causes. See below (information may not be 100% accurate):

Muscle spasms or twitches that wake you up at night and feel like a pulsating heartbeat in your limbs can be caused by several factors. Here are some common causes:
Electrolyte Imbalance: Low levels of electrolytes such as potassium, calcium, or magnesium can lead to muscle cramps and spasms.
Dehydration: Insufficient fluid intake can cause muscle cramps, especially during the night.
Overexertion: Intense physical activity or exercise can lead to muscle fatigue and spasms.
Nerve Compression: Conditions like sciatica or carpal tunnel syndrome can compress nerves, leading to twitching or spasms.
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS): This condition causes uncomfortable sensations in the legs and an irresistible urge to move them, often leading to spasms.
Stress and Anxiety: High levels of stress can lead to muscle tension and spasms.
Sleep Disorders: Conditions like sleep apnea can disrupt sleep and lead to muscle twitching.
Medications: Certain medications can have side effects that include muscle spasms or twitching.

You may want to see a neurologist and get tested for sleep apnea.

Hope you can get answers soon. Hang in there and prioritize taking care of yourself. You can’t take care of others if your are not well (like the analogy of putting your oxygen mask on in an airplane before attempting to help others).

Thank you! I’m praying that this breathing feeling will go away.
I try to ignore the need to take these deep breaths but it will start feeling like I’m under water suffocating. It’s a very horrible feeling in the chest.
