Bone building drugs for osteopenia
Hi
So I have been on zoldronic acid for 3 years. These things were going well had breast cancer last year and had to have radiation I just suffered two compression fractures Three weeks ago. Saw my endocrinologist today. He wants to change me to tymlos or evenity. I had a tia 5 yrs ago. After the tia they found I had a sinus node issue in my heart. Hi bld pressure and a blockage I. My aorta. I take meds for all. I am scared.
To change medications. And I don't know if this is good or not. Should my cardiologist be called.

Sue417, your cardiologist should be engaged for the decision.
I think the newer Cardiac warnings on Evenity will ease your choice. Interestingly, the best medication for your bones seems also to be the best for your heart.
Tymlos has no known drug interactions. Your endocrinologist will monitor your calcium levels. You might start Tymlos at a low dose until you see if you have any adverse reaction. You might also consider a slightly different variation with the same active parathyroid hormone 1-34--Forteo because it is a lower dose. Both Tymlos and Forteo hasten healing.
Hi
Forteo is not an option because I have had radiation for breast cancer and it's not one the Dr gave me as an option. I am in canada. Also I have to use extended Healthcare. Evenity and tymlos are the two that are covered 80% by my insurance. Tymlos if I qualify will be 100% covered by the manufacturer. Lots of paperwork to be filled out and sent in. I am having my infusion oc zoledronic acid in June. I used to be able to get it in the town.I live in, but the government has shut down the IV clinic. So now I have to go 1 hour away to get a 30 minute infusion.I am so annoyed. What do you mean
By the cardiac warning on evenity
sue417,
you may be safe taking Evenity. It started with a black box warning about taking it within five years of stroke. The warning was commonly countered by the fact that the implicating trial compared with alendronate which may be cardio protective. Additional caution was added more recently after another clinical trial.

Many here are taking Tymlos at a lower initial dose.
I'm in the US (political apologies, I didn't vote for the guy and feel quite embarrassed).
Starting at one or two clicks can give your body time to adjust lessening side effects. But some patients stay at the highest comfortable dose, which isn't always the eight clicks of a single dose.
I love that Canada is paying 100% for Tymlos, which I consider a miracle drug.
Hi
Thank you for that information. So I definitely do not want to take a evenity. I had a tia five years ago. It sounds like forteo would be a better option for me. Although i am not excited about giving Myself a shot everyday.
Tymlos was not offered to me
Sorry it's not tymlos they pay for it's Forteo . So many names I get confused
Sue417, even better.
I've had no side effects with Forteo.
The daily injection it is simple, quick and painless.
I had an unbelievable positive result with Temlos, that I took for two years. Only side effects, some site swelling and leg pains, primarily at night, that increased as I got closer to the end of my two year regime.
I don’t know if this was part of why Temlos worked so well, but I I did religiously take it the same time every night and never missed one injection…
Best of luck …
Hi
That's good to know. So no side effects when you first started? How long have you been on it. Do you have any fractures.? I just got my bld work back everything is so good . I don't understand how I got this osteoporosis. My endocrinologist really feels the breast cancer radiation is the cause of my recent fractures.
Thank you it will probably be forteo
Radiation is definitely a bone hazard interrupting the DNA of rapidly dividing cells. Chemotherapy causes actively dividing cells to become senescent. Those senescent cells produce chemicals that induce bone death which further damage areas of bone. Aromatase inhibitors, like Anastrozole, lessen the bone protective estrogen.
But you can't skip the cancer treatment.
I didn't fracture. I had rectal cancer and the radiation path was directly through my femur head. After a (one time only) dexa T score of -5.6, I stopped researching (and hesitating). I suspect that the inspiring dexa measured an area of edema or fat infiltration post cancer treatment that resolved before it could fracture.
I was osteoporotic before cancer treatment because of age loss of estrogen.
I'm on my third year of Forteo.
I expected side effects. I have low blood pressure, so for my first week of injections I had the BP cuff handy. In the first seconds I'd lose 20 systolic points, but didn't feel anything--no dizziness, no loss of balance. Within seconds of the first reading the pressure begins to rise for me over the next two hours. For some it takes four hours. I was careful for a week or so.
But I do like morning tea on the roof.
Some people so have side effects. Forteo acts quickly to draw calcium from your bones, kidneys and digestive tract into your bloodstream. This in turn rapidly dilates your blood vessels. The increase in calcium can cause nausea. The widening blood vessels can cause headache and dizziness. You might try having something salty and something caffeinated to
constrict the blood vessels. It is good to be well hydrated to increase serum volume to counteract the increase in vessel volume. I started with a blue corn chip and then turned a green olive.
You might ask your endocrinologist to order bone markers before beginning and one or two months after starting treatment. I like the marker P1NP, but also CTX.
I can't write enough good things about this drug.
