Blood pressure drugs that hasn't worked

Posted by rfloyd @rfloyd, 4 days ago

Been through every drug for blood pressure and none worked. ICU many times. Found genetic testing and found I hyper metabolize drugs. Dr. found drugs on testing that worked for me.

Sorry that you had to go through all that, but it seems some bright bulb figured it out for you. I'm happy for you.

@SusanEllen66 It isn't resistance. It's 'run-it-through-the-liver-in-jig-time-and-out-the-nether-orifices.' The body metabolizes all drugs, at least most and to an extent, such that they have 'half-lives' where after a certain period half of the blood levels exist from the most potent levels after ingestion. Drugs like Eliquis and other direct-acting-oral anti-coagulants have have lives between 10-14 hours, depending on the patient. Caffeine has a half-live of about 5 hours for most metabolisms/people. In this person's case, the liver quickly renders whatever she/he is taking and renders it innocuous. So, this person spends a lot of time with no desired effect from the drugs.

@SusanEllen66 The meds go through my system fast with something to do with my liver pushing the meds out quicker.

Hi @rfloyd, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! How awesome that your doctor tested you genes to figure out you hypermetabolize drugs!

I have several genetic variants that change how my body functions. I could not be happier that my doctors make more informed treatment decisions and generations in my family after me have this information earlier so their doctors can do the same.

Would you share more about your genetic variants affecting your treatment decisions? Do you know what drug(s) are particularly good or off-limits for you? Where did you get your testing?

@jlharsh I received my test from Bio- Genetics in Florida. Gave me lists of drugs for certain drugs I should take for muscle relaxers and what drug I should avoid . Their are some drugs that are very bad for me. So the Genetics testing is pretty cool.

@SusanEllen66 I have to take small amounts more times a day, because my liver kicks the drugs out to fast.

There's a mail order lab called Color that did my genetic testing. Found the gene for my familial hyper cholesterol and also told me of certain drugs that I don't metabolize well, in my case, pain meds and blood thinners. In addition to the test results you have access to a genetic counselor to ask questions. Cost is around $400 if I remember correctly

@rfloyd
I believe that is the same place I received some cardiovascular genetic testing from. I was asking my doctor that ordered it for updates every 6 months so I would be aware of changes, but have since left that provider. You have me curious about mine……

What prompted you to get genetic testing? Did you have any pathogenic variants, or variants of unknown significance listed?

@jlharsh I actually stumbled across it looking at internet. Because I was at my last rope on BP meds. I found site and filled out questionnaire and was approved by medicare. I ask my Dr. to order test.
