Blood Clots - Connected with PMR?

Posted by christopherc @christopherc, Dec 24, 2021

I am a 66 year old male and was diagnosed with PMR about a nine months ago after symptoms arose about a year ago. I was recently diagnosed with bilateral pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in both lungs) which can be life threatening. I had ultrasounds of both my legs and no clots were found and I had no symptoms of blood clots in my legs. Neither my rheumatologist nor my Hematologist thought it was likely that the blood clots had anything to do with my PMR. My gut tells me however, that the blood clots are related to my PMR and I was wondering if anybody in this support group had any similar experience that might shed light on how I ended up with blood clots in my lungs.

@abbeyc

This can happen even while on steroids and if you don't have any PMR type pain/stiffness?

Yes it can even if you don’t have PMR. Long car rides for plane flights where are you are sitting for hours with your knee band can restrict the blood flow to your lower legs and cause blood clots. It’s very important to get up every hour or so and get at least a minute of movement to get the blood flowing to your legs.

Did you by chance have covid vaccine before getting PMR? Certain vaccines have been linked to blood clots also. Good luck

Thanks for the question. No, I had PMR before my first Covid vaccine. The blood clots in my lungs cleared up within 60 days of going on the blood thinners. My hematologist has reduced the dosage of the blood thinners by half and seems confident that I won’t get any more blood clots, at least arterial blood clots. Thanks for the good wishes and best of luck to you too.
