Bladder UTI's

Posted by collenp @collenp, Mar 2, 2023

Just had my appt with a Urogynecologist for severe UTI, bladder pain, crystals in urine, and small renal cysts on kidney. Experiencing lower adominal pain and right back flank pain.
The physician spent an hour and a half with me. Quite thorough.
Also performed cystoscopy, incontinence testing.
I do not have a prolapsed bladder.
But atrophied vagina. 66 years old.
Painful relations when having sex.
Married 46 years.
So was prescribed Estradiol vaginal cream (Estrace) Application 2 times a week.
I am on the fence beginning treatment. Too many side effects. To name a few: Blood clots, stroke, liver damage, dementia, breast pain and growths.
It was also explained that this treatment could help with UTI's.
Has anyone else been prescribed this medicine for similar circumstance. Look forward to hearing from anyone.
Thank you

I was prescribed estrogen cream 5 years ago and like you, decided not to use it because of side effects. Now 5 years later I was told again by a new urogynocologist to use it as a way to help stop all the UTI's. I also have had two surgeries to raise a prolapsed bladder, both unsuccessful.
I have been using the cream for a month and have had no side effects. In the same amount of time I have not had a UTI. I had a pessary inserted and it has help with severe bladder pain and I guess, UTI's. So between the cream and the pessary I have finally found relief from chronic UTI's and severe bladder pain. I would definitely go back and tell the 65 year old self to use the estrogen cream, don't wait till you're 70.

Thank you, thank you for your kind and informative response. I am so relieved to hear you are doing well.
I have an appointment with a nephrologist in 2 weeks to check my kidneys because I had crystals in the urine which could be a breakdown of a kidney stone and this was the first UTI in the last 3 years. So I filled the prescription for the estriadol and I will go to the kidney doctor first and then Iwill give it a few months to see if another UTI occurs and maybe instead of 2 treatments a week just do 1. See how it goes. If you don't mind me asking. How many applications of the estriadol do you apply each week?
Have you experienced any breast pain or elevated blood pressure and/or weight gain? I just lost 10 pounds. Don't want to gain it back.
Thank you again for responding to my post.
Take care.

Hi... I use the estrogen cream twice a week. I want to mention that using the cream is supposed to create a healthier, stronger, vaginal wall. Maybe that would help with the painful intercourse? I absolutely have no breast pain or elevated blood pressure. Can't talk to weight gain... I have had three surgeries in three months, two of which were colon related. I lost 10 pounds, but in the last couple weeks, I have gained 5 back. I truly don't believe the cream had anything to do with my weight, because during the colon crisis, I was on a strict low fiber diet for 8 weeks. I had a few weeks of broth and jello during that time, which caused the 10 weight loss, not the cream.

Thank you for getting back to me. I pray you don't have to go through any more surgeries. You have been through alot.
I just want to get the kidneys checked out first. If I get another UTI I will go to an oncology urologist for a good check up of the whole bladder system including the ureters. My father passed away from stage 4 Bladder Cancer. I was his caregiver. Its been 5 years, my heart still aches. He suffered terribly. He was 84 years old and lived out of state. He received diagnosis and treatment too late.
I am just trying to be proactive. It's no fun getting old.
Take care

I have an extremely atrophied vagina (intercourse would not be possible anymore), and I use vaginal estrogen cream 2 to 3 times a week to prevent more problems. I do this now for about 5 years, and have zero side effects from it. I will continue to take this cream, because it makes my lady parts hurt way less, and makes me feel better.

Thank you for your response. Good to hear none of those concerning side effects that I have read about have occurred.
Thank you again.

I don't use the cream but the Vagifem suppositories. I have used it for years with absolutely no side effects other than the reduction of UTI's and all other related issues with vaginal atrophy. The estrogen goes no where but in the localized tissue that you are treating. I have friends who have had heart issues, blood clots, etc who are safely using this with no issues at all.

Thank you so much for the recommendation.
I don't understand why physicians don't look for alternative treatments that do not cause side effects.
I will give the product you recommended a try.
Thank you
