Yes she did. I visit the Dermatologist every 6 mos. It is my understanding that many GP's do not have the skill set to ID skin cancers, so it is advisable to have an annual appoint with the Dermatologist.
@kenc
I go to Mayo Clinic. When I asked my PCP to look at a skin problem he immediately says will referr me to dermatology.
At Mayo Jacksonville if you do not have or had melanoma there normal seeing you is once a year. Of course will see you (which happens to me all the time) if you have a suspicious area.

Today I had a biopsy of the vagina. Md stated probably squamous cell and also noted thickening of the R labia with skin tags. I am on blood thinner and have been hemorrhaging with clots for 20 hours now. Nothing seems to slow the flow. I am 71 years old with no cancer history. Perhaps a call to the doctor tomorrow?

@debbiejp Since you are taking a blood thinner and have been bleeding with clots I hope that you have called your doctor or better yet gone to the Emergency Department at your local hospital. The hemorrhaging you describe sounds very serious to me and if it were me I'd be seeking medical care on an urgent basis.
My computer indicates that you posted your note just 6 hours ago. What's going on this morning and what have you decided to do?

I’m a retired RN and worked in cancer nursing for 20 years. I took vitamin K 5mg tab last night and did not take the Xarelto 20mg I normally take. This morning the bleeding has stopped and I have contacted my doctor.. plan to take it easy today. If the bleeding returns, I’ll either go to my doctor or present in the ER. Can this be resolved with cauterization?

@debbiejp We aren’t medical professionals here on Mayo Clinic Connect so I cannot answer your question about cauterization. In fact, since you are a retired RN which I read in your profile then I’m thinking you are very knowledgeable. Since the bleeding has stopped then that’s a good thing. If it starts again especially over the weekend I would call your doctor and speak with the doctor on call or go to your ED. Just as you wrote. I’d do the same.

Thank you so much for your input. I took a second vitamin K tab at midnight and the bleeding stopped between 3 and 7 am this morning. It has not begun again today. I did speak with the office nurse and related the info to her. At this point I can only wait for the biopsy results that will indicate the next steps forward. I am feeling releaved about the bleeding but alone in this fight so far. I resist telling anyone until I know for sure what comes next so this loneliness is my own doing. Just don’t want to worry anyone til I know something. Thank you so much for reaching out. I appreciate the contact very much. Are you a patient also?

@debbiejp I’m happy to know that you feel relieved. Waiting for biopsy results is very anxiety-provoking as you know given the many years you worked in cancer care as an RN. However, it’s different when you, yourself, are the patient, right?
The answer is yes, I am a patient. I was diagnosed with endometrioid adenocarcinoma, FIGO Grade 1, Stage 1a in 2019. I dutifully scheduled and went to all of my cancer surveillance appointments and a recurrence was found in 2021. I had radiation therapy and have been continuing with cancer surveillance appointments with no evidence of disease since 2021. I live in a rural area of Michigan and so the cancer care I needed in 2019 was not locally available. I received a referral to Mayo Clinic in Rochester and I’ve been a patient there since 2019.

Helen, thank you so much for reaching out to me. As I wait for the biopsy results, I feel in limbo, unattached and on the sideline. As I worked in cancer nursing for so many years and then as a Hospice nurse for almost 10 years, there is no surprise factor anticipated. I feel I know what is ahead, have accepted it and intend to fight each cell within me. It’s the not knowing that’s difficult.
I am in the panhandle of Florida and until 5 years ago, I lived on 80 acres here. It was actually my family homestead settled in 1832. I’m getting old (at 71) and have numerous other health concerns (nursing kills you)! lol. Broke back, replaced knee, urostomy for Stage 3 chronic kidney disease and others. I moved to the suburbs and am happy here, closer to hospitals and family. I worked with the Oncologists whom I’ll be seeing soon so that is kind of weird.
You are way ahead of me and I’m sure you’re feeling blessed to have yours in remission or gone.
Thank you again for reaching out. I feel the need to connect with someone who can understand the myriad of emotions I’m feeling at present. It is odd to me that I’m not afraid, angry or panicking - I just feel detached but blessed that I’ve connected with you. Thanks again and I hope you will keep in touch. I’d like to stay in the loop with you and your journey forward.
Well, waking up this morning, I find that I’m bleeding again. Not as bad as before but still fresh red blood. Taking it easy today and have taken another Vitamin K 5mg.

Looks like you are getting good care.
Yes, once a year is normal unless you have a problem.
