Best practices for sterilizing nebulizer components
Hello Friends,
How do you all manage the cleaning/sterilizing of nebulizer components? Secondly, where is the best place to purchase new nebulizer parts?
With treatments 3-4 times a day, I’m finding a need to adjust the process. I’ve learned so much from this group, I thought I’d ask here. Thanks so much for your help.

You’ll find different answers to this here and people tend to change as they deal with it. I’ve been doing it just 18 months. I started by boiling it 10 min2x/day and putting it on a rack covered with clean paper towels and covered with clean towels. I progressed to pouring boiling water over it and soaking then rinse with boiling water then using baby sterilizer bags. I just got a bololo bottle sterilizer with dryer. I like it so far! Neater and seems like less chance of contamination, (though it has vent holes on top I cover with towel once process done). I ordered extra neb kits and nasal rinse bottle, too.
@pacathy- Thank you. I’ll check out the Bololo bottle sterilizer- anything to simplify the process. 😉
@marmee26 Cathy gave you great advice about sterilizing. I'll try on where to get parts .
First, others may have a different experience, but my supplies are out-of-pocket, insurance does not cover.
I typically use Just Nebulizers (justnebulizers.com) for my supplies, there are other reputable suppliers too, but JN often has package deals or discounts.
What to keep in mind
- Tubing and nebulizer cups are mostly interchangeable, so find one you like and order several. I try to keep 2-3 spares on hand at all times. Call the supplier if you have questions about compatibility.
- Be sure you buy reusable nebulizers, not disposable ones - those will melt when sterilized. Try to find multi-packaging without a lot of "extras" like masks, to save on trash.
- Order extra filters for thee compressor too - when nebbing more than once a day these need to be changed more often that the manual says. It DOES make a difference - my daughter killed a machine last year because she didn't realize it had a replaceable filter.
I am new to this too and it made me crazy trying to figure out what to do. Mornings I soak my neb parts and aerobika in soapy water and rinse with boiled water. At night I soak in soapy water, rinse and put in baby bottle sterilizer with dryer. I’m hoping this is okay.
I know what someone said about some of the nebulizer cups and accessories will melt if sterilized in boiling water or a baby bottle sterilizer, yes they will. I was told by my Pulmonary hospital (UVM) that if it is a item that could possibly melt due to high heat sterilization, you can also soak in hydrogen peroxide for 30 minutes then rinse thoroughly and air dry to sterilize. Just FYI.
Over time my cleaning & sterilizing processes has evolved. Like many others I used to clean/boil after each use. Now I use the Bololo sterilizer and do not bother sterilizing after each use, only once a day. I often wonder if that's too much. Ultimately, it comes down to your disease state and comfort level.
As for suppliers, Save Rite Medical I have found good and reliable and they do not require a prescription. https://www.saveritemedical.com/collections/monaghan-medical-corp Nebology is also good but they require a prescription and only sell PARI products, as they are part of PARI.
