Bariatric after Nissen Fundiplication

Posted by kjr @kjr, Dec 8, 2023

I had a full Nissen Fundiplocation 12 years ago with success. I am obese and looking at bariatric surgery due to physical limitations. Any pros or cons which procedure? Has anyone had this done after having Nissen?

I had the gastric sleeve 11 years ago and lost 90 pounds, and am currently scheduled for my full gastric bypass surgery in January because I have gained back 40 of those pounds and didn't initially lose all the weight I wanted. I would recommend you get the gastric bypass, but only because of my experience with not losing all the weight I wanted and my weight gain.

I had a successful Nissen done in 2005. It worked until about 2019 and then the wrap started to slip and cause issues. I had cyclical vomiting, nonstop heartburn, and bouts of gastroparesis until I got my roux en y done. I have vomited 2x since surgery and it wasn't nearly as terrible and painful as it was to be sick like that before the surgery. No more gastroparesis. No more heartburn. No more vomiting non-stop for days on end. It is one of the best decisions I made.

I had my surgery on 9/11/2023 and to date I've lost 45lbs. I highly recommend Dr. Bowers at Mayo in Jacksonville. He knew exactly what was going on when I described my issues and was quick to make a surgical plan for me. Even though it wasn't initially for weight loss, it's an AMAZING benefit. Everyone on my bariatric team in Jacksonville has been absolutely amazing. Definitely worth the 5-hour drive for me personally.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions, I'm happy to be a sounding board...

I met with the surgeon she is recommending the Roux-en-Y. They have to take down my Nissen first. After has it been hard to maintain the Vitamin B and Calcium?

You'll be on a multivitamin for the rest of your life. Initially, you'll want a chewable because you can't swallow a pill (I had to grind up all my medications and take them with applesauce for the first 2 months before my Doctor would even let me try swallowing a pill and even now I sometimes have trouble with it, almost 4 months post-op)

I had my first set of labs around the 3-month mark and they were phenomenal compared to my last labs before the surgery. My doctor took me off of several medications due to the improvements, including my blood pressure medication.

I use the Bariatric Fusion brand line of products because they're not super outrageously priced and Amazon carries them so I can subscribe & save that way. They offer it through their website as well but I think there's a shipping fee (and I got it priced cheaper on Amazon). I use the Multivitamin chewable (4x day), the calcium chews (2x a day if I remember), vitamin B complex sublingual (1x a day), and an iron supplement chew (1x day). I take other meds so the 4x a day doesn't bother me. I just forget to take my calcium and iron frequently because the chews don't fit in my pill box with all my other pills and the vitamins are pretty huge but again, it's chewable and they dissolve quickly.
