Low Back Pain Going into Hip and Leg

Posted by donaldjames1 @donaldjames1, Dec 8, 2020

I have had 5 surgeries/fusions on my back and neck. I have not been able to get out of pain. I have lower right back pain, goes into my hip and into right leg. They think it might be my hip now, but doctor took and xray of hip a d they looked fine, he said. So I am in a position where I'm on pain meds and dont know who to see that can help me. I need help be a use of the pain when I get up. I also have pain in between shoulder blades which is secondary to my right lower back. I have had MRI done and they do not see what it may be... I'm just tired of being in pain with no life. I know God sent me to this site to find out options. Can someone help?

@bunstuffer Wow. I don’t mean to sound ugly but your PCP can just stick his “just live with it” comment where the sun doesn’t shine! That is inexcusable and hateful. I bet if your PCP had to live a day in your shoes then he would be looking for answers ASAP! Please try to get to Pain Management outside of Mayo. You’ve got to get a prescription for an opioid to help control your pain. Sending hugs and best wishes. ❤️

@kaki068 I've been to the VA Pain Clinic and to one at a large local hospital and at an ortho clinic. No relief. I got a nerve block last week and in some ways my pain is worse.

I'm just curious, have any of these doctors shown you the x-rays or any other imaging they have ordered?
There are a minimum or 25 million people misdiagnosed in the USA every year because some x-ray tech read the image wrong, was talking to their girl friend or hung over and just glanced at the image and if there was something wrong if it didn't jump out and bite them in the butt they dont see anything.
there are millions of people that die every year due to improperly read imaging tests. there are also cases of them actually getting images mixed up.
make your doctor show the images and explain them, if they won't find another doctor.
I hope you can find a solution that works.
God Bless

@bunstuffer I am so sorry and I understand how horrible your pain is. I see a wonderful doctor at Mayo Jacksonville (FL) who does facet joint injections at multiple levels in my lumbar and epidurals in my thoracic area. The epidural in my thoracic works great and the facet joint injections help about 70-80%. I still have pain throughout my body that really hurts and my hip replacement hasn’t done well at all since surgery so I see another doctor (outside of Mayo in my home town) who manages my pain medicine. Please try and see a pain management doctor who will help you with some pain medicine. You need it! Ask your primary care doctor who he/she recommends.

Get a good OD. Injections will help. Buy a Lazy boy, use ice and heat, Lidocaine patches, walk, PT, neuromuscular massage, connect with a good pain clinic.

I went through all of that for several years, nothing helped. One day my chiropractor took new X-rays to see how my scoliosis was progressing and happened to notice a dark blur in my abdomen. He called me that evening because he was so concerned and suggested I go to ER for a CAT scan at the very least. I did, turned out to be an abdominal aneurysm. Went to a vascular surgeon and had it all taken care of. Symptoms are completely gone now.

Has depression crept in for you or worsened? I hope you are dealing with that soon. Yes, I know you likely feel ,”what the hell would that do.?” I live that as well but to go on with my hopes of improvement,I need to add more strength to my moods to keep on. For myself ,yes. For my wife as well! Down days are overwhelming but dealing with my doctor about depression has helped. I had nothing to lose by telling my doctor”I’m sinking. I need help to persevere.”
No lies from me, it is damn hard but I so much want to better and get some joy back in my life. I’d like you to get better!

@countzeller Depression is now an ongoing thing for me. Many days, I don't even get out of bed, and now I don't even want to eat. I've lost 25lbs in the last couple of months, despite really trying to eat, only to make a rush to the bathroom to vomit. I think doctors are not interested in old people, at least I get that feeling. I'm still trying to find a new doctor, but it's difficult in Toronto. I have my name down in several places.

@borwin98 I came to this realization with the help of my sister and wife(my advocates): what I was doing was not working and I would not improve without advocates moving me along step by step. With meds the depression gradually improved and I assertively moved forward with finding a clinic that would assess everything to figure out what to do. I did choose Mayo Rochester Mn by telling local Dr I wanted a Mayo referral. I didn’t ask for it; I said I needed it and his assistance to get it. I so hope you have an advocate! People do not understand how hard it is to help oneself when depressed. Who can be your advocate? Your current Dr can be that person or change doctors. You are a customer. Do one thing today to move forward even if it is small. You can do it! You are reaching out by posting. Now expand that time usage to begin with more medical intervention. Please.

Speaking as a retired RN please know that XRay techs are NOT the formal readers and interpreters of any type of radiology procedure.
Sure, they may have an idea but a Board Certified Radiology MD is who interprets and writes up the report! The report should then go to the doctor who referred you for the test/s.
