B12 deficiency leading to headaches & face tingling/numbness?

Posted by plo99ca @plo99ca, Mar 3, 2023

I was recently found to have very low levels of B12. Has anyone else experienced strange symptoms from low B12? My recent symptoms included daily headaches and face tingling/numbness and a feeling of being generally unwell. Would love to hear from others with B12 deficiency symptoms.

What was your B-12 number from bloodwork? Approx six months ago I woke up with sore calves and few days later tingling in feet forearms and calves. Went to doc and they tested for B-12 and was 190 which from what I understand anything under 200 is considered deficient especially if it has been there for awhile. Fast for ward to today and I do have many of the symptoms you describe. Lots of nerve pain full body tingling including face. I do have some neuropathy I am being treated for in the feet but minor. I guess low B-12 can damage nerves. Has your doc given you a shot and are you on oral supplements??

Hello @plo99ca, welcome. Sorry about your symptoms. Yes, I'm right there with you. I became B12 deficient and experienced headaches, numbness, tingling, electric zaps and more, in my face and body. It's a little scary at first when you don't know the why behind the what.

Nerves fire up and act out when they don't get enough B12. The good news is that with supplementation, symptoms may settle down and nerves may regenerate. Have you begun B12 supplementation?

B-12 is only supplied by animal sources. Eat some meat. You can have B-12 shots.

My test came back at 146, very low. I am on weekly B12 injections now for one month to see if the B12 level will stabilize.

The strange thing is that one doc tested my B12 and it was 146... then another tested 2 weeks later and it was normal. Weird.

Thank you Rachel. I started weekly injections for one month, hopefully that stabilizes my numbers a bit. If not then will go to B12 sublingual supplements daily. Interestingly, in speaking with 2 of my siblings (both in their 60's), they each also supplement B12, I had no idea. Perhaps there is a genetic link. I hope your symptoms have settled down.
