At the age where we need some help

Posted by kartwk @kartwk, Jul 6 11:19am

with housework etc. I am not certain how to go about finding someone. Also, H is concerned about strangers coming in the house.

We really need help with mopping the floors, the shower floor, dusting high areas etc. I can generally get to anything that I don't have to bend over for (I lose my balance) or reach up for (same reason).

Where to start looking for good help. Thanks.

Here are some places I would start - Recommendations from a friend or neighbor, the local Senior services or Council on Aging.
Make sure the person you interview is the one who will come to your home, that they have their own liability and worker comp insurance, and ask to see a current background check. The woman my daughter has used for 3 years checks and insures all of her employees this way, and once every 2-3 months does my daughter's home herself to be sure her workers are cleaning as they should be.

I have had luck asking neighbors and friends, and asking them to put feelers out. I have used cleaning services which I found to be more expensive in the quality of their work not as good. Having someone come to your home does make it a little uncomfortable until you get to know that person. But as you begin to love your Clean home and it’s worth that few hours of discomfort.

I have had a cleaning service for over 30 years. When I was in my 40's I started having trouble with tasks like cleaning the bathtub and and other job that required bending and reaching. My doctor diagnosed fibromyalgia. i first got a woman who advertised for house cleaning but she was soon gone when her husband was transferred with his job. Since, I have had the same nationally franchised cleaning service. They don't clean it as well as I would like but there's not much choice. I also have gluteal tendinopathy and have just started using a walker. The social worker gave me a list of all kinds of services when my husband was discharged from the hospital last month. If one of you is a veteran, the VA also might have contacts. AARP is another possible source of help or referrals. The service I use doesn't allow the workers to use cell phones while on the job, either.

That is one of my concerns, cell phone usage. When we moved here 14 years ago we had a well-known moving service. What a joke, the one guy was on his cell all the time he was suppose to be packing things.

Same thing when he unloaded at the new house. But he had the audacity to try to butter me up to give him and his crew a tip. When they were packing things I even commented to him that I thought we had hired a 3 man crew, not 2 because he was always on the cell. He just laughed.
H gave tips to the 2 that worked, but left this guy out. He was teed, but too bad. Tip means to insure performance and cell phone usage doesn't cut it.

I asked some local neighbors who use a lady, but they are in the same position as me as she notified them she is retiring at the end of July. Bummer.

Am going to contact the County Health Department as a start to seeing what they can steer me to as a senior needing help in this area.

One more thing, I don't want to hire the local town gossips, and I have been warned by neighbors that several that do cleaning are just that.
