Multiple Arthritis issues - Is this unusual?

Posted by jdnc2023 @jdnc2023, Aug 26, 2023

Hi everyone! I have had joint issues for over 40 years, but doctors blew me off because rheumatoid factor was negative. I have recently been diagnosed with serum negative rheumatoid arthritis, erosive osteoarthritis, osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis. My hands are the worst, with pretty much all joints affected.
Is this unusual to have so many things diagnosed?
The erosive arthritis is the worst and apparently there is no good treatment for it. I'm allergic to NSAIDs and Tylenol. I'm pretty good at handling the pain, but I'm not looking forward to not being able to use my hands.

Hi there,

I have had negative RA factor arthritis for over 30 years. My diagnosis is psoriatic arthritis based on my symptoms and because I had psoriasis at age 11. Methotrexate and hydrochloroquin (also known as plaquenil) has helped me the most. Last few years they have also diagnosed me with osteoarthritis. So the rheumatoid/psoriatic arthritis is an autoimmune disease and the osteo is a wear and tear of the joints disease. I am also off NSAIDS as it gives me gastritis despite taking something to protect my stomach. I do well with long acting tramadol, which is called tridura for painl. I have tried different biologics but none have helped or the side effects are not tolerated well. One, I had an allergic reaction that landed me in ER.
Unfortunately autoimmune diseases have some common elements but each individual can respond differently to treatments. There are other drugs out there like lefludamide and sulfazalazine but I did not tolerate them either.
My worst pain is when winter turns to summer and summer turns to winter. In Canada this happens quickly and my immune system just doesn't like that. Humidity is also not good for me.

I am surprised that a doctor would ignore your symptoms just because you had a negative RA factor. I hope you are seeing a rheumatologist. I see mine every 6 months and she is wonderful. Get someone that works with you and is a good listener. I had better luck at a teaching hospital.
My hands can be useless at times and so can my lower back and hips. The best thing for me is to keep moving. I enjoy going to group exercise. Even though I may be the youngest in the class, I can increase the ankle weights and the dumb bells. You may have to take more breaks but don't stop moving; at least for me that works.
Wishing you well,

I haven't! I have taken smaller doses of boron off and on through the years, but I will definitely look into that. I also saw something about LDN and will research that further. Thanks much 😊

Yikes! I think I may have uveitis. My eyes are always red and sort of swelling on the surface. Once my ongoing treatment is figured out, I'll see if my eyes improve.

I am like you. I have had sero negative rheumatoid arthritis for 30 years. And I was diagnosed with erosive osteoarthritis just two years ago: I also agree that is the worst. I have had a knee replacement and back surgery to address osteoarthritis. And I may soon need a second back surgery, although I’m doing my best to avoid it. I wonder why some of us seem to get so many types of arthritis at the same time. I have found that low-dose naltrexone addresses inflammation and pain. It’s off label so you’ll need to talk to your provider about it, but I truly have found it helpful in reducing the amount of NSAIDs. I’m taking while also addressing pain and inflammation.

I have been on LDN since last August. I've had excellent results up until the past 6 weeks. It stopped working. I'm at 4.5 mg and the rheumatologist said there is no data to show a higher dose would help. I had no results with methotrexate, hydroxychloroquine or Humira. I was thrilled with the relief from LDN, and I'm bummed that it stopped working. I temporarily felt like a new person! I'm allergic to NSAIDs, so I just use curcumin, boswellia and MSM for some relief.
I'm glad the LDN is helping you! Someone said that it doesn't stop disease progression, but I haven't found much research about that.

@sweetundine When you wonder about why some of us get multiple types of inflammatory disorders, my rheumatologist told me it is very common, and is being studied. He keeps very current on the research, and feels there can be a number of triggers - genetics, nervous system, brain, environmental exposures or infections and an overactive immune system.
In my case, I am pretty sure genetics plays a big part, but can also see there could be several contributing factors.
I have found some relief from DMARD meds, exercise, heat, PT, ice and topical Voltaren gel. I can also ignore the pain better when I am engrossed in something interesting, not just passively watching TV or surfing on the computer.

On multiple autoimmune condition at the same time, I recently read research that painless apical long standing (tooth root) accesses can trigger both rheumatoid arthritis and cutaneous vasculitis.

I find that very interesting, as 11 years ago I had a botched coronectomy done and when the root was dug out of my jaw a year ago it was clear that it had been infected for a very long time.

I was diagnosed with RA and cutaneous vasculitis last year, and also diagnosed with asthma in 2020 .

I also have extensive osteoarthritis but that is most likely due to hypermobility with a very physically active life.

I'm sharing this article on anti-inflammatory foods which I saw in another thread (thank you Sue!). It is one of the best I've seen. All I'll say it that it works. I've been on an adventure learning about food for 7 years now and my inflammatory arthritis has been in remission for the last 6--it took a while to work. I'm so grateful I learned about the healing properties of food. But look out for quacks, each with their own esoteric theories and books, expensive lines of supplements, etc.

@ruralgal76 That's good to hear! My doctor suggested the next step would be to try Enbrel. I have an appointment in April. In the meantime, I'll see if I can get AgelessRX to prescribe a higher dose of LDN.
I have been off all other meds for a little over one year.
