Cell Phones Issues with Arthritic Fingers - Any Suggestions?

Posted by dennismm @dennismm, Jan 6 7:28am

Well, this might be a limited problem, I don’t know how many of you have this problem, but I’ll make an attempt anyway.

Like almost everyone today I rely on my cellphone. Apple iPhone. A couple of my fingers on my right hand are slightly bent making it next to impossible to hit the correct letters on the keypad. I want to type an h but wind up with the next key over.

I’ve tried voice dictation, but sometimes it’s just not practical. Has anyone been able to find a different keypad that they downloaded with larger keys? Yes I know the the iPhone screen has limited area for larger keys, but even slightly more spaces would help.
Thanks for reading!

I don't text, so I ask people to email me. I suffer from the same problem. another thing that may help is a stylus. Looks like a pen or pencil but the tip doesn't push down it stays solid.

@dennismm, I suffer from fat fingers myself 🙂and often have trouble typing messages. It helped a little on my iPhone to change the settings for larger text. Once you change the settings for larger text there are some apps that you can download for making larger keyboards but the caveat is that if you allow an app to access the keyboard it has access to everything you type including passwords and more so I'm not OK with allowing them full access.

This is for iPhone 16 but it also worked on my iPhone 17.

I don't have an I Phone but, auto correct might be helpful when you hit the wrong key. Also, I am able to touch the screen and slide my finger to each letter as you spell out the word.

Thanks but auto correction doesn’t help since the words o type are gibberish. Still investigating? And tjanks&

@dennismm

I have an Android phone..Samsung…if I turn auto rotation on it makes the letters on the keyboard larger. See if you can find auto rotate on your iPhone.
Also, don’t hold your phone while typing. Put it down and use both hands and find the most comfortable fingers to type with. I don’t have arthritis but tend to type with one finger. I agree about voice texting and always have to go back and correct words but I do use it.

I set my phone to use swipe instead of hitting each key. Also, Motorola has a phone with a stylus built in.

Why don’t you just do everything by voice? This way, you only have to go back and make edits we’re in necessary. This way your fingers are only on the keyboard for a shorter time.

@breick
Sorry don’t understand how I can swipe?

Swipe is when you drag you finger from one letter to the next to create a word instead of tapping each letter. It would be in your settings but depends on your phone make and model. Probably best to Google it.
