Art for Healing

Posted by Harriet Hodgson @harriethodgson1, Oct 26, 2018

Kudos to the Montreal Museum of Fine Art for allowing physicians to write prescriptions for free admission to the museum. And kudos to Mayo Clinic for its art program. From the beginning, Mayo Clinic believed that art can uplift patients and foster healing. Whether it's Rochester, Jacksonville or Scottsdale, Mayo Clinic displays a wide range of artwork for patients. The Rochester site published a brochure for a self-guided tour of artwork. I live in Rochester and every time I'm at Mayo, I take the time to look at the artwork.

@harriethodgson1 How exciting! Art therapy (my own) is what helps me. @gailb is taking an oil painting class and has not painted in years. There are places offering art instruction and learning tutorials online that are free. If nothing else they are fun to watch. One does not need a lot of supplies as a box of crayons is a start. Try YouTubing thus. Thank you for sharing about this.

I am on Mayo’s support because we lost our daughter in early June. Please read my story so you can understand our pain. Thats my daughter and I in a very recent photo above.
In July I started painting, something Ive always loved to do. Ive been painting every day and it, to me is good therapy. Though I know friends and family nearby is much better for me ( us) but because I dont have family close by, it is quite difficult. Painting helps and I know Kirstin, my daughter is happy I am doing it.
Both my husband, Barry and I are both grieving, both of us are in pain. So hard! Some days are barely Ok; other days its so hard! Devastating loss.
In the beginning ( June).. people wrote me and it was helpful
sharing our pain. I havent heard from anyone in three months and its hard! Lonely!
We had company last week and it was quite nice...took our minds away from our horrible loss.
Painting does help but someone to talk with is very nice!

@ihtak46 Kathi, it’s good to hear from you. You talking about your painting might just be what I need to try to get back to my art quilting. 😐 Can you show us some of your art? Was your daughter also an artist? Tell us more about her, please. (I only have sons, so I love to hear about daughters!)

@ihtak46 Kathi, it sounds, and looks in the photo, as if you and your daughter had a great relationship. I cannot imagine the pain you feel. I am so very sorry.
That's great that painting helps, it would be even better to get together with people more frequently. I went through a bad period at one point and I found that throwing myself into my job helped enormously. It wasn't just the work, it was being there with people and the typical office chat that we all engage in. If you are not working, have you thought about going back to work at all? I went back to work after my daughter started college --- I had been retired for 20 years --- and I really found work to be a great outlet. My jobs were not career jobs like I had before starting a family, but the human contact that they involved was good for me.

I love crafting, but unable to do now due to severe neck, shoulder and low back pain.

You might want to try one of those yoga ball chairs. Stand up and paint and then sit back for about 30 minutes and look at the painting.

Here's one of mine I like to do large paintings. It puts me in a meditation.

This is one of my large paintings. I give my inspiration for my husband who is a musician. He's a hundred percent disabled veteran so he plays all the time so that means I paint all the time. He's my inspiration. I wish y'all ladies lived closer to Houston I wouldn't mind painting with y'all.

I am so sorry to mention your daughter in that picture I didn't read the whole message until a second ago. I couldn't imagine losing my daughter. She's such a good 13 year old kid. But I bet you would like to hear but she is also an awesome artist maybe even surpassing me and I went to college I have associate's degree in graphic design and architecture. She's doing graphics design at 13 and I didn't learn that stuff until college. She has won many many awards and so if I in the past. We also love doing art together. And I bet art made y'all close also. I really do wish I could meet you and you can meet my daughter and I and we can paint together. Sometimes people like us need other people like you and vice versa. I'm not grieving but I'm very depressed because my husband has PTSD really bad and my daughter and I both have to deal on a daily basis with chaos. Please message me back when you get a chance. I'm still getting used to this app or website. Also I would like to see a painting or two of years
