Are very rapid growth lung nodules related to emphysema?
I've had copd since 2001 and it's reached well into stage 3. About 3 years ago a routine ct scan showed 3 small lung nodules and subsequent scans have identified more nodules every time. They now appear in every lobe of both lungs, some with spiculated margins and having very rapid growth. None of them have reached tumor or mass size but there are nodules that are now 2 cm. My pulmonologist has discouraged me from any type of biopsies as I am at high risk of pneumothrax and the targets are small. He states that PET CT scans would be useless as he believes them to be inflammatory in Nature. Sputum cultures revealed some fungal growth and he dismissed these results as laboratory contamination. My last consultation with him over the phone he said we had been looking a little too closely at these nodules and would back off from such frequent imaging. I have an appointment for the end of August but no further imaging has been ordered.
My emphysema is progressing and I am able to do less and less all the time. I feel like he has just given up on me.
The nodules are still undiagnosed. Has anyone been in a similar situation? What more can I do? I have started Mullein tincture but it's just a hail mary.

I also had stage 3 COPD and had a biopsy for abnormal nodules. I did fine but every case is different. Mine turned out to be cancer Ugh. After 4 years of treatment, I'm in remission but the COPD is much worse (the chemo & immunotherapy is hard on the lungs). I would get a 2nd opinion just to put your mind at rest. If it's cancer, you can make informed decisions then. If it's
not, good news! At least you don't have to wonder. I'd rather know, than not. Good luck to you.
I wish I could offer something helpful, but I’m in a similar situation.
I had two separate procedures where 6 Zephyr valves were put in my right lung &, a year later, 7 put in my left lung. My FEV1 got worse after each procedure, now at 32%.
It seems hopeless, yet I continue to try to exercise what little bit I am able. The future looks rather bleak for this 79 year old COPD patient.
Too bad those Marlboro ads back in the ‘69’s didn’t cover these situations!!!
