Aredia for bones

Posted by Ryman @ryman, Feb 16, 2017

Does anyone take Aredia for osteoporosis? I have been taking it for several years by IV and I know it is helping. My PC wants to replace it with something else. If anyone is taking it, how long and have you had any problems with it? Thanks. I am new here and just looking for answers as I am having a number of symptoms.

Hello @ryman, I'm glad you reached out to the Connect community. I would like to introduce you to @gailfaith and @robbi who have both discussed having osteoporosis. While we are waiting for them to respond can you tell us what symptoms you are having? Has your PCM advised what medicine he feels would work better for you?

Aw, yes, prunes are useful for other things, too. My pc is supposed to be finding something else for my osteo. Maybe she will be happy that I am taking prunes. I can have my next DX in June.

Have you looked into Forteo? I have severe osteoporosis with pronounced kyphosis. I am a senior citizen, used to take Fosamax, however, I devloped a lot of foot sweling. I am only taking calcium and Vitamin D at present. I having been reading about Forteo and find that it is the only drug for Osteoporosis that actually builds bone. I am going to Rheumatologist for further treatment and am planning on asking him about this drug. Have not checked on the price yet because I am afraid it will be extremely expensive. I have had Vertebroplasty (for fractures) in the past and it was helpful, however, I think I need more than just the calcium and Vit. D. If I find out any more about Forteo, I will certainly post it here. If any of you have info, please share it with us. Thank you

I have a problem with most medications because I have a swallowing problem. I have been using Aredia because I could do it by iv. Prolia is a shot but it is extremely expensive and not covered by my insurance. So far, my dr hasn't come up with anything else. If she does, I will share it. Thank you for the suggestion.

Justin, I will definitely do that. I first really heard about Forteo when I signed up for a Webinar through the National Osteoporsis Foundation. The webinar was very interesting, lot's of Q and A. NOF is another good reference site for people with Osteoporosis. We can use all the help we can get!!!

I will check out the NOF. Maybe I can get more info on Aredia and what I should maybe use instead. Thanks

@sandytoes 14. I started you a long note about Fosamax & Boniva @ my medication program interrupted it & now I cannot locate it again.Ultimate Bone Support is OTC, no Rx needed. I have taken it for a good 5 years & cut to twice a week due to my husbands passing & now I am trying to survive on $1000/month Social Security. My rent went to $1000/month plus utilities, trash, etc. Not manageable. My son offered for me to move to his home in Tampa, FL & he has given me his Master Bedroom & bath. At times it can be difficult & over the holidays he was unemployed for 9 weeks. He found another job and started working again on Feb. 1. There are other annoyances but I won't bother you.Ultimate Bone Support comes from Advanced Bionutritionals, PO Box 8051, Norcross, GA 30091-8051 or Phone: (800) 791-3395. The lady with the company that I have dealt with in the past has retired. She came up with the formula and the fact that calcium supplementation does not help osteoporosis, but creates kidney stones. Vitamin D is good as are strontium,  hops and the other ingredients. You can not take calcium within 4 hours of the Ultimate Bone Support as it causes a reaction, so I always take the Bone Support at bedtime. I cut to twice a week after my husband died and I'm trying to Survive on my Social Security retirement of $1000/mo. My rent in Cary, NC went to $1000/mo plus utilities + other essentials like food, medications, etc. so, my son offered to have me move in with him in his home in Tampa, FL. I will have been here 2 years the end of July.I took Fossamax for five years, then it started making me vomit it back up after I took it. My Dr changed me to Boniva and the same thing happened. Now I have problems swallowing pills & sometimes food. I have to grind my food up small to eat it &!someyimes I still throw up. The Dr wanted to swiitch me to something else that was IV every 6 months but it got lost in the office & I never followed up. I wanted to take something natural. I hope this helps. I feel like I have a structure from the Fosamax. It is actually a poison and not good for any of us. I am an RN, BSN, I graduated from UCLA School of Nursing in 1958. I retired at 70, having worked all that time, I worked about all areas of nursing. All for now. Wish me luck on Friday, Feb.24, I'm having a cardiac cath & possible insertion of 2 stents.Sincerely,RobbiRoberta J Lumsdon
