Architectural Distortion and Asymmetry after diagnostic mammo

Can’t help but be panicking right now. I went in for my first mammo (40yo), got called back immediately for diagnostic on left breast. They found a persistent asymmetry with architectural distortion but couldn’t definitively see it in the ultrasound. I also kept hearing the radiologist and tech talk about it being star shaped.

She noted a BI-RADS category 4 and with my personal lifetime risk of 21%, I’ll be going in for a stereotactic biopsy next week and also waiting on approval for MRI.

I’m just so scared but trying to stay positive that, best case scenario, it’s benign, worst case, it was caught early. I know I shouldn’t Google but I can’t help it.

Has anyone had experience with architectural distortion? What are the chances it’s malignant?

My anomaly was the subject of a 2nd MRI with an MRI guided biopsy. It ended up being a large hemangioma (abnormal cluster of blood vessels). So it was nothing to worry about - but until I found that out, I sure was worried. I hit my 5 year last November, stopped the AI drug & just had my annual Mammogram and all is well. Best wishes for you.

Biopsy done on 2 sites. With all my prodding questions, radiologist all but said it was malignant and regardless of biopsy outcome, surgery will be needed to remove it. He said that previous biopsy did not correlate to what they were seeing (3 radiologists reviewed images) and with the MRI images,, they see that the previous area biopsied is adjacent to a much larger area that would not have been seen without the MRI.

It’s hitting me that there is almost no chance of it being benign. Now it’s a waiting game for the biopsy results, yet again.

On the (tiny) positive side, U/S showed that the other areas of concern were benign.

For those that had the distortion, do you remember the size of it? I’m feeling like mine is crazy large which is making me worry about how bad it could really be.

They said mine was over 2 centimeters. It ended up being 13mm. Much smaller than they could see on MRI. I had lumpectomy and radiation only. Now trying to figure out a medicine I can take without so many side effects.
