Appleby Procedure (Distal Pancreatectomy With Celiac Artery Resection)
My surgeon is thinking about performing this procedure on me. Anyone here had this? I am curious about expected outcome and complications.

@hdholakia hi, I would love to hear what helped your husband to thrive. My husband had surgery more than 2 months ago and he lost more than 20% of his weight. He was not overweight. He is having a hard time with appetite and fatigue. I would love to hear what made your husband to get better.
@gramstrong23, recovery is a beast. You're so right that recovery includes mental recovery. There are a few discussions in the Cancer: Managing Symptoms support group that talk about the mental and emotional aspects of cancer (https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/cancer-managing-symptoms/)

Does your husband have a therapist? Have either of you met with an oncology social worker?
Husband had the Appleby procedure Oct17. We were in hospital for 27 days as his insides were very slow to wake. We have some issues with what’s left of pancreas leaking so we’ve had to come home with a drain along with TPN at night . Drs were able to remove all the cancer and we are grateful! Recovery has been a beast. Looking for any advice on food, mental recovery. He has constipation no matter what, doesn’t really want to eat because of fear on how it will make him feel. He is a Vet who already struggles with PTSD

2 ReactionsHi
Yes
Chemo
Just to make sure we call them little stinkers went in my blood stream.
I had previously done before surgery
12 rounds of chemo
6 weeks of radiation with a chemo booster.
That abled me to have the surgery. Because of the engulfment wrapped around the arties.

2 ReactionsWhat a hopeful and helpful post, @miracle07. Will you have any further treatment?
PHILADELPHIA PA NOT PITTSBURGH PA.
IS WHERE THE SURGEON IS.
HI!
I AM SO TRULY SORRY TO HEAR YOUR HUSBAND HAS STAGE 4 PANCREATIC CANCER.
GOOD NEWS IS THAT HIS DOCTOR IS SAYING HE IS A CANDIDATE FOR THE SURGERY.
I HAD THE APPLEBY PROCEDURE A FEW WEEKS AGO.
I AM BACK HOME ALREADY.
I HAD AN AMAZING DOCTOR.
HIS NAME IS DR CHARLES YEO IN PITTSBURGH PA.
WE LIVE IN ANOTHER STATE AND DROVE THE 18 HOURS FOR MY SURGERY.
I HAD STAGE 3 PANCREATIC CANCER AND THE CANCER WAS WRAPPED AROUND ALL MY ARTERIES EXCEPT ONE ARTERY. MY SURGERY WAS A 50 PERCENT CHANCE THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO REMOVE THE TUMOR BECAUSE OF WHERE IT WAS.
SURGERY WAS SUCCESSFUL.
MY SURGEON AND HIS TEAM SAVED MY LIFE.
I RECOMMEND DR CHARLES YEO/PHILADELPHIA PA.
IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS PLEASE REACH OUT.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND.

2 ReactionsWelcome @gramstrong23. I moved your question to this existing discussion so that you can more easily connect with others like @hdholakia @beachdog and @lisarlee:

Appleby may also be called "En bloc celiac axis resection" for pancreatic cancer. You can read more about its use at Mayo Clinic in this article:
- Development of new surgical procedures and predictors of outcome for patients with advanced pancreatic cancer https://www.mayoclinic.org/medical-professionals/news/development-of-new-surgical-procedures-and-predictors-of-outcome-for-patients-with-advanced-pancreatic-cancer/mac-20511783
How are you doing?

1 ReactionMy husband was Diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic cancer in Feb 23. He has been going through treatments and Dr. is now recommending the Appleby procedure. I have read about the procedure but really would love to talk with anyone who has had the procedure performed. We are currently looking into getting a second opinion for another center.
My husband has been going through treatments and now drs are recommending the Appleby procedure. How is your husband after the surgery??
