Blue light therapy - What were your experiences?

Posted by kiwigirl94 @kiwigirl94, Jul 24, 2025

I received BLT and didn't feel anything on my face- a remote warmth on one side. I have a friend that says he feels tingles and stinging plus warmth. My Doctor said I am one of the few that it work on. I did the hour with the serum and then 16 minutes under the light.
I told the tech that I didn't feel anything and she said that was fine.
Is this normal? I ended up having to put a cream on my face for 2 weeks twice a day. Turned the whole process into an endurance test!
But I don't think the treatment was done right. So wanted to hear if anyone else had this issue. Thanks in advance!

Mine did... but my copay was huge. I'm asking them to credit some back.
The cream works just fine. Just takes longer.
Good luck!!

Yes, this happened to me. I did it once on my face and it was hot and stinging and really worked. Then I did it on my forearms and got almost no reaction, even though they later reacted intensely to a cancer cream protocol, so it was definitely done incorrectly. I was never able to get to the bottom of it or get reimbursed. Sorry this happened to you.

Thank you for replying. I truly believe that it was done incorrectly. But god forbid they own up to their mistakes!
I for sure won't be using this office again as my roommate has great results every time he goes to his dermatologist.
They are looking into giving me a credit or something right now. So, we shall see!
I will let you know when I hear back. Take care.

Toward the end of the process, it feels like a hot sunburn. I keep the cream they give me in the refrigerator, but you can also buy small round gel packs that you keep in the refrigerator for relief. I goofed once and took a walk without covering up after the procedure, which resulted in a huge red swelling and peeling to the point people wanted to help remove hanging pieces. However, I was quite pleased. Lately have been getting the laser process (on my dime) for brown discolorations and that is interesting.

I had a light treatment done on my shin yesterday…and let me tell you it hurt terribly! 13 1/2 minutes my leg underneath that light!! Its sound is like a hand held vacuum and was about a few inches above the spot. O it burned real bad and I asked the lady that was giving me the procedure is if it was burning off the cancer and she said it was. So I was trying to think of a song that was about 13-14 minutes I could run through my head to try and not focus completely on it and I did. Time seemed to rush by after that and happy it was done! I have another treatment to do 1 more time next month then things will be better and it will fade. I was telling my self I made it through a tragic car accident I can make it through this!,

My doctor want me to do blue light and I'm so scared that my face will fall off an not come back! She wants me to incubate for 2 hours than go under blue light for 1 hour! Everythiing that I have found so far online has just has incubactions for 1 hour and like 16-20 minutes for the blue light an the after experience was reported very painful. How am I to do 1 hour under blue light after 2 hours of incubation? Has any one else done this much time? I'm 56, fair skin and had mohl surgey for a small spot on my nose that my orginal doctor for years was ignoring at sking checks. A few round of feezing did not do anything for the spots so I switched dermatogist and that new doctor did a bioposy to have results to be a basil cell carcinoma. Please let me know if anyone has had a long blue light treatment session and what your experience was with the therapy session and healing process. Thanks

Hello @kslates,

I moved your discussion and combined it with a discussion titled:

"Blue light therapy - What were your experiences?"

@kiwigirl94 started this discussion because of their experience feeling very little on their face when they underwent blue light therapy. @groversgirl and @marye2 also shared their experiences.

@kslates, have you had a chance to talk about your concerns with your provider about the length they want you to go under the blue light? Did they explain why they wanted you to undergo a longer duration than typically administered?

@JustinMcClanahan
Justin: Blue light therapy is a wonderful way to treat sun damaged skin with actinic keratoses . As a plastic surgeon I have had Blue Light Therapy about 10 times over many years ( face and scalp ). Good news, the new routine now is application of the Levulan and immediately go under the light for 30 minutes instead of an hour of Levulan then 16 minutes under the light. The new routine is almost totally painless and just as effective. I am a big proponent of Blue Light and my insurance has paid every time.

@JustinMcClanahan contacted my doctor and she said that the order was in for 16 minutes 40 seconds and not an hour. So I’m not really sure why the RN/tech were I was trying to make the appointment said an hour. I’m still super nervous since I have fair skin and always just burn in the sun. I always put sunscreen on. But I’m terrified of any possible side effects like scarring has anybody with fair skin had scarring because of the blue light?
