How long does it take for hot flashes to improve. I’m about 10 months out since dx and treatment. Have not tolerated hormone blockers well at all and thinking of stopping.
I’m fatigued and upset about how my quality of life has been impacted esp by the adjuvant therapy.

I am so sorry about your hot flashes, I can’t say how long it will last but I can tell you the things I have done over the long years to tolerate them. I can’t really say I have embraced them but I have learned some tips. The best of which is paper fans. The little hand held ones you can buy in import stores or online. The fabric ones are pretty for dress up but don’t work as well. I have them everywhere! One next to the bed because when you lay down you get one and when you sit up you get one. Next to my chair, inside and out. Always at my desk. The next one is a rechargeable fan my husband bought me online that is really quiet and gives me that while I can keep knitting. Finally be patient with yourself, if you have one of the really bad ones where it is almost seizure like, just stop and give yourself a break. You have been through a lot!
I noticed you said you are 10 months out from diagnosis. Struggling with hormone blockers and not tolerating adjuvant therapy. Can you tell me more about your journey, what treatments you have gone through, and what you are taking now. Are you changing up your diet and lifestyle as well as taking treatments?

Hi. Have done radiation and anastrozole and now one month on tamoxifen.
Dx- dcis in Situ. Non invasive. Stage zero and grade 2. No lymph nodes.
Have always led healthy life style with food and exercise. Lately due to meds - extreme fatigue and very hard to workout. Shortness breath . Your feedback so appreciated. How many years for you?

I hesitate to tell you it has been 18 years of hot flashes. But I was in my 30’s when I had a chemical oopherectomy, then a physical complete hysterectomy, then tamoxifen and anastrazole for a combined 15 years. In the last year and a half I have found I have a little more fatigue than I like. I have a little bit less in the hot flash department but we haven’t had any real heat yet this year. I have some that are almost like a seizure, I get a few minutes where the world turns plastic or unreal before the heat rushes in. It used to frighten me, but it has been a few years now and I just stop whatever I am doing to avoid danger until that part passes. Do you have these?
Have you talked to your doctor about this shortness of breath?

REPLY

No. Hot flashes not like a seizure, but I feel very depleted some times when vey occur.
I have spoken to dr about shortness f breath and that is why they wanted me to stop tamoxifen . I see my oncologist next week. I was on hormone therapy for 10 years and they think it’s harder due to that. Don’t know.

One additional question - has anyone had shortness breath and palpitations on either anastrozole or tamoxifen? Thanks.

My hot flashes are like sitting on a heated car seat on a hot day. When this actually happened for the first time, I thought I accidentally hit the seat heater button in the car, alas ...

Good morning!

In reading your post regarding the book "How To Starve Cancer", yes I have read the book in its entirety. It was wonderful reading about Jane's journey with healing her cancer, but found the book to be very, very scientific. She is extremely informative regarding blocking the "cancer T-Cells" and all pathways that drive tumors, but very scientific in her explanations. She explains what "off label drugs" work for you and provides a diagram of supplements, herbs, etc. to take. I did incorporate other supplements that I would not have known to take if it weren't for reading her book. I have what is considered Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer Er/Pr+ and HER2-. My journey had me in both the conventional world and integrative world.
