Anyone out there have an increase in parathyroid hormone?

I have CKD stage 4/5 and EGFR is 15 My parathyroid hormone has increased dramatically. Has anyone taken calcitriol for this? If so, any problems? Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hello, I had parathyroid surgery this summer because my calcium levels were really high. They just left a small part in.

Have you been to an Endocrinologist for the parathyroid elevation? That could be causing your CKD. Best place in my opinion is the Norman Center in Tampa Florida. There are approximately 8-10 physicians who work with patients with Thyroid, Parathyroid and Adrenal issues. They are fantastic and will rapidly move you through there assessment/admission process. I had a parathyroid tumor removed there and upon discharge was provided with all 8 physicians names and cell phone numbers. Did have to call once during early evening hours and received a call back from the physician who did my surgery within 30 minutes. Please have this assessed by your physician immediately before you further compromise your renal situation.

I had undetected parathyroid disease for as far as I can trace at least 5-6 years. The Dr failed to recognize the hallmark symptoms. Was not discovered until he left and a female physician took over my case and picked up the lab discrepancies within 10 minutes. Long story short, had a parathyroidectomy done at Norman Clinic in Tampa - the only place to go! Now I am left with severe osteoporosis in my right hip of which I will not take medication for, kidney stones, CKD at stage 3 but am very stable. I take no new medication without checking with the nephrologist and my renal panel numbers are stable. Duke, by the way has got to be the mecca for disease management. I had Zyphyr valves for COPD inserted there. The are fantastic and would return if I needed any additional medical attention that I feel the small southern town I live in is not equipped to manage!

I too had surgery removal of 2 parathyroid glands at Norman Clinic. Very pleased with results, but years later had a kidney removed due to cancer and was stage 4 ckd. Now I am 3b and my nephrologist retired. I live in central Florida. I am searching for a new nephrologist and concerned about diet advice. Trying to obtain a good source of plain foods good for ckd. I can make my own recipes. Any suggestions? maylbee

@maylbee I would consider supplementing your Nephrologist with a Renal Dietician. Even good Nephrologists often have rather minimal training in diet. Of course, run everything you do past your Nephrologist to make sure you aren't getting any dangerous advice from a dietician, but one who is specifically a renal dietitician could help you out.
