Anyone out there have an increase in parathyroid hormone?
I have CKD stage 4/5 and EGFR is 15 My parathyroid hormone has increased dramatically. Has anyone taken calcitriol for this? If so, any problems? Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hello, I am 59 1/2 and have had parathyroid issues pre (took paracalcitrol) and post kidney transplant. (taking Cinacalcet) -I manage my calcium intake and Dr.’s keep a close eye on my bloodwork. So do I. It’s a balance with meds because one thing impacts another. Anyway, I have had kidney disease since I was 29. Truly a journey! Never on dialysis and I received a kidney from my son 9 months ago. Praise be to God! Prayers to you for patience and healing.

2 ReactionsThanks for your prayers and your reply. I’m just concerned that, with all the other medications I’m taking for CKD, that there might be some negative interaction.

2 ReactionsYour Dr. can review your meds and make recommendations or refer you to someone who can review your meds and diet so you can make an informed decision, like a clinical nutritionist/dietician. Don’t hesitate to seek professional guidance, especially around your calcium intake! I did and so far things are working out well.

2 ReactionsI have elevated parathyroid hormone but no kidney disease. Calcium normal, being monitored by endocrinologist for any changes. So far no issues

2 ReactionsI had stage 5 with very high PTH. My nephrologist sent me to a surgeon who suggested removal. Talked to my endo (type 2) and she referred me to someone in her office who is a specialist on calcium absorption and heads Duke’s bone density clinic. He told me that there is more long-term success with surgery then drugs, so off they came. Surgeon took of some, then blood tests, then some more. Took about 4 hours. Inserted a small portion in my left forearm. Now taking Tums for calcium.
BTW, had a transplant last June.

1 ReactionI had undetected parathyroid disease for as far as I can trace at least 5-6 years. The Dr failed to recognize the hallmark symptoms. Was not discovered until he left and a female physician took over my case and picked up the lab discrepancies within 10 minutes. Long story short, had a parathyroidectomy done at Norman Clinic in Tampa - the only place to go! Now I am left with severe osteoporosis in my right hip of which I will not take medication for, kidney stones, CKD at stage 3 but am very stable. I take no new medication without checking with the nephrologist and my renal panel numbers are stable. Duke, by the way has got to be the mecca for disease management. I had Zyphyr valves for COPD inserted there. The are fantastic and would return if I needed any additional medical attention that I feel the small southern town I live in is not equipped to manage!

I don’t know much about parathyroid, the levels or ailments associated with it. I understand it is part of the endocrine system and that’s about it. I’ve had diabetes for 50+ years, stage 3 CKD and osteoporosis (plus some other stuff). My endocrinologist and nephrologist are both in the same healthcare system. They share my lab work results, monitor nearly everything (as far as I can tell) and recommend adjustments as needed. Nephrologist has changed my calcium supplement dosage. Endocrinologist does bone density tests and has prescribed Prolia injections every 6 months. I’ve been told that everything is stable. Unfortunately I had an insurance change effective 1/1/2026 and if I could just get those people to get with the program that I and my providers have established over the past 20 - 21 years!

I was pleased with my surgery of a parathyroid at Norman Clinic in Tampa. It was arranged well and I received information about overnight stay in hotel because I lived elsewhere.

1 Reaction@mayybee The Norman Center was extremely impressive. The surgeon you did my parathyroidectormy even called me once I go home to make follow--up suggestions and see how I was doing. What other place can you have a procedure done and leave the surgical center with the cell phone numbers of all 8 physicians at the center. I was very impressed and pleased with every aspect of care with them. Wish they had other centers that were similar in all areas of health care! Dream On!
