Anyone on clofazimine?

Posted by westcottkm3040 @westcottkm3040, 1 day ago

My MAC doc wants to add clofazimine to the Big 3 I am already on. Since I have been on them for 8 months and still coughing he wants to try adding this. Some side effects listed that make me reluctant to try it. It’s my 3rd time on the drug regime in 10 years.
Any advice from people who have tried it?

Except of getting orangey with time , a minor side effect, all was fine. I was on it for 20 months.

He orangey are we talking about? Did it help with the MAC?

I also have gotten quite orange skin and bodily secretions over the past 9 months of treatment with clofazimine, but the main adverse side effect for me has been dryness, especially of the mouth, leading to a painful tongue and sensitivity to acidic and carbonated foods and drinks, and spices. (Including salt!) I use a mouthwash for dry mouth, but it's of limited value.
OTOH, I had much worse side effects on ethambutol (peripheral neuropathy) and rifampin (autoimmune-mediated thrombocytopenia), so clofazimine side effects are preferred.

I’ve been taking Clofazimine 14 months, just dry skin and everything orange, salvia , ear wax urine and skin

How orange? Like I can see it clearly? Or you just know ?

I have been on Clofazimine for 5 1/2 months. I have the browning of the skin and get a lot of comments on my "tan". Urine is also pinkish. My hair is thinning, and skin is very dry and itchy.

@westcottkm3040 I just started Clofazimine 4 days ago. My doctor took me off Rifampin when I started Clofazimine. The listed side effects are concerning, however, I have searched through this site for discussions on this drug and it seems most people tolerate it rather well. The most common noted effect is the skin coloring and reading up on the drug itself, they do say that 75 - 100% of people experience this. Many on this site say it just makes them look like they have a tan and I'm ok with that 😀.

@breatheeasy is it helping with the MAC? Would you start on it again if you could go back?

So far so good for me. I’ve been on it two months, and hope that I can continue without any obvious side effects, although I would also be OK with a little tan, ha ha. I’ve been having a hard time coughing up sputum, so haven’t had a recent sample to tell whether the abscesses is gone yet.

@westcottkm3040 I believe it has helped. My sputum samples continue to be negative. My IDS says I will be able to totally go off treatment the end of February. I started this journey last December.
