Anyone on ADT taking anti-depressants?

Posted by waynerl @waynerl, Nov 24, 2025

I have metastatic prostate cancer and am on ADT drugs (abiraterone and prednisone daily) and a shot of something (can't find name) every six months I think. I lost a dear pet recently and have been some depressions. Some friends suggested an anti-depressant. I'm not sure. Any suggestions? Thanks ~Wayne

I have been on Prozac and Nortryptiline for 20 years. It is definitely helping me through PC radiation treatment and ADT.

Definitely contact the medical professional(s) guiding your treatment. I lost father and sister to suicidal depression, so I deeply believe in professional help. That said, my first lines of defense against depression are being social and vigorous exercise. Give your doctor(s) a call!

@waynerl, profound sadness and depression when suffering a loss is normal. Coping with the loss can be handled in a variety of ways as you have gathered from the comments on this discussion.

It can help to talk with others. For this reason, I thought you like to know that grieving the loss of a pet is being discussed in the Loss & Grief support group here:

And there is also this discussion

How are you doing?

ADT gave me very bad depression as well as brain fog. I was put on Wellbutrin. The brain fog and loss of energy cleared up almost immediately, and the depression started to lift about a month later. Wellbutrin, BTW, is one of the few antidepressants that doesn't have sexual side effects for most people (if that is important to you). I was on 300 mg extended release once a day in the morning (when it kicks in it felt like 3 cups of coffee), and now am on 150 mg and hope to wean off that eventually though the doctor says there is no rush if it's helping.

About 25 years ago, I went on Wellbutrin For a couple of months. I found I could not reach climax at all with that drug in me. I immediately stopped it.

You say no sexual side effects boy oh boy I sure had one. Of course, if I had been on ADT, it wouldn’t matter.

Sure glad to hear it did so much for you though. I know it can get rid of depression, but also get rid of the fatigue people feel and brain fog is a major benefit.
